if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.

It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.

This flick isn't officially out on DVD even as it is stated on some sites that there is a DVD out but it's some kind of bootleg so still only available on VHS this flick made by Dutch director Ate De Jong isn't even that cheap to catch, I have seen the VHS go for over 30£. Is it all worth the money? It doesn't take too long before the action takes place. You got your typical warning about the dangers on the road. Of course Charlie (Chad Lowe) and Rachel (Kristy Swanson) ignore the warning but 10 minutes into the movie Rachel is taken away by a cop with a strange face. The only thing Charlie can do is to save Rachel. Of he goes to the highway to hell. The effects used are part CGI and real effects and it's the combination of both that makes it all watchable. The CGI is only used for effects that can't be done by real effects. There's also a bit of laughable situations in it that also gives it a better view. It's really the score used that remembers you that it is made early nineties. But after an hour you have seen the best. It drops a bit in action and you got the feeling that you have seen it all before. The fake Adolf Hitler was annoying and not funny. Still, the effects really makes the movie but it's a bit outdated here and there and does remind me somehow to Mad Max (1979) even as it has nothing to do with it. The final makes it again worth watching with the stop/motion dogs and the creatures walking around. Not really a horror more a fantasy mixed with science fiction. Worth seeing if you are into a rare story.Gore 0,5/5 Nudity 0,5/5 Effects 3/5 Story 3/5 Comedy 0,5/5

It gets a 5 only because the production value just wasn't there and the director's vision was slightly...boring. Uninspired cinematography really bogs down this otherwise solid above average movie. "Highway to Hell" is a clever if not unexceptional vision of a goofy, mildly dangerous hell. Writer Brian Helgeland wrote a GREAT script, make no mistake about it. There is some really neat and funny pieces under the hood of this older model if you just stick with it. Acting is decent. Kristie Swanson looks uncomfortable and was a poor choice giving us nothing if not eye candy. Patrick Bergin is fantastic as Beezle and warms us up to his charm. Chad Lowe is actually a pretty good protagonist here running the gauntlet to get his lady love (Swanson) back. C J Graham is a menacing hulking Hellcop and does a great job... The main problem, for me, was that director Ate De Jong falls flat on a great script and good crew. Perhaps it was the budget..but his vision of hell was cheap and muffled. It's still one of the better "hell" movies and or demon movies out there by far. You won't be blown away but you might just find enough to appreciate the obvious intelligence and talent attached to it.

Not, it's not really great art. Call it nostalgia, I guess, but I always get a kick out of this film. Usually I keep my comments short, but I think I'm going to wax for a bit about HtH.The first big plus for this film is the cast, which includes all kinds of favorites, like Richard Farnsworth, Kristy Swanson, the Stillers, Patrick Bergin, etc., plus quite a few cameos by other noted personalities. Everybody (with the exception of the kid playing Adam) does a good job.Second, the FX and soundtrack are pretty good. This was not a big-name, big-budget movie, but they took some care to make everything at least fairly high-rent. The soundtrack is extra-good.Third, the story is decent and the script doesn't bite. It's basically a rework of the myth of Orpheus, with some not-so-subtle changes thrown in. The dialogue is a bit pretentious at times, but it's thankfully low-key and they don't waste all their time on exposition.Which brings us to the fourth and final plus for this movie. The film is quite a bit more subtle than you might expect. Several plot points are not truly resolved and no explanations at all are offered for many others.*****SPOILERS!***** For example, why did Clara end up in Hell and what "decision" did she make about staying there? Is Rachel really in love with Charlie? Why are they eloping? What's the deal with Royce? I've come to the conclusion that there are some not-so-obvious aspects to the story that help it make more sense. For one thing, I'm not convinced that Rachel (a hottie) is really that passionately in love (if at all) with Charlie, a guy driving a pizza delivery car. She sure doesn't appear to be. It seems like she's really more interested in getting away from her Mom and causing her pain, making sure to leave her Mom a note explaining that she's run off. Charlie appears to be just a tool for her to use. So, why's Rachel leaving? Who knows? Maybe her Mom is pushing her to enter school as a music student, since there seems to be something going on re her playing the violin.I also believe that Rachel was killed when Charlie fell asleep at the wheel. That's why the Hellcop was able to come get her. This is much more in line with both the original myth and with the power that the Devil exercises over her.As far as Clara and Royce go, I think that Clara was also killed on that stretch of highway. Again, she would have been a virgin and intended to be a bride of the Devil. However, I suspect that she fell for Royce and lost her virginity to him in Hell, both ruining her as a bride and alienating the Devil from Royce, his adopted son. This would have been the bad decision that Clara made.*****END SPOILERS***** So, check this movie out. It's definitely a product of the late 80s, but I really enjoy it.

This movie has a lot going for it. The visuals are terrific. The desert locations are used to great advantage. The acting is totally acceptable. The story moves along at a rapid pace, and the imaginative script constantly surprises. The sum of all these positive parts, is a very enjoyable film. It is a shame that "Highway to Hell" hasn't been seen by more people, because it surely would benefit from word of mouth touting. Nothing else matters except that this chase through hell leads down a very entertaining highway. Numerous cameos add to the fun, and the movie easily overcomes it's modest budget. Seek this one out, you will not be disappointed. - MERK
