In the year 10,191, the most precious substance in the universe is the spice Melange. The spice extends life. The spice expands consciousness. The spice is vital to space travel. The spice exists on only one planet in the entire universe, the vast desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune. Its native inhabitants, the Fremen, have long held a prophecy that a man would come, a messiah who would lead them to true freedom.

One of the fundamental errors in the film is that a great novel of ~600 pages with appendixes on planetary ecology, religious systems etc. has been boiled down to a 2 hour movie. The story is told way too quickly, and several great discoveries in the novel are just given away in the film. At some point it felt like I was watching a trailer for a tv series... Stuff that is essential to the original story has been left out, e.g. Paul's visions on the coming jihad and his struggle with it, the death of Paul's son, etc. The resulting gaps have often been filled with totally idiotic crap.If you are interested in the Dune saga, please read the books. Do not be led to believe that this movie is what the saga is about. I would have rate 1/10 but for the great scene with Patrick Stewart and a pug.

Imo Dune is one of the best sci-fi-movies ever made and e.g. far more impressive story- and graphic-wise to Star Wars. Frank Herbert's Dune cycle is for sure one of the best sci-fi/fantasy epics ever written, imo even superior to Tolkien's Lord of the Rings - in imagination, philosophical and political depth, the universe of Dune is unchallenged by most other fictional works with only a very few exceptions.David Lynch adapted the first book of Frank Herbert's epic accurate, only changed in some details. The actors are very good ones (e.g. Jürgen Prochnow, famous for his role as der Alte in Das Boot, Sting as the Harkonnen Feyd Rautha, Linda Hunt, Patrick Stewart etc). Maybe they are not the biggest stars of Hollywood, but all are serious and very good actors indeed (well, Sting proved he can do acting too).Sadly, the project was due the lack of financial success not continued. Imagine, the whole of Frank Herbert's work (not those stuff from his son) would have adapted into movies of this quality! Dune is one of the most unique movies of the sci-fi and fantasy genre like The Dark Crystal (Jim Henson, Frank Oz), Flash Gordon (the 80s movie), Blade Runner, The Matrix and Fight Club.Lucas' Star Wars is for the inner cowboy and Indians or dragon hunting knight part of our self. Dune is one for our adult self.Must watch. Must collect.

(Flash Review)They threw the heavy book at you. It appears having a working knowledge of the book is critical for a clear understanding of this film. Within the open few scenes, they throw lots of names, locations and quarrels at you with little context. Trying to remember obscure names right off the bat was a challenge and I wasn't sure if one was a person or location as they sounded alien and mythical. Point being, they dug a hole for me that I had to work to get out of and not feel stupid. There were some unique and creative looking creatures and lands. Occasionally, the special effects looked fine for the mid-80s and other times the effects were appalling even for 1984. The pacing felt off too with several long scenes that drug on. The plot was rather typical too with a son of an important man who attempts to thwart enemies from conquering them or something all in a far future in lands of sand. If you haven't read the book, I dare you to watch it.

I was eager to see the movie after reading the book, but.. well.. it was dreadful!!.. Just didn't flow for me and the acting was awful.. Raban was the worst and I felt uncomfortable watching sting, he was okay in Quadraphinia but just horrible in this.. This isn't a 6.6 rated movie.. It's more a 2.2.... In summery.. Give this a miss and read the book..
