Pretty Good

It is both painfully honest and laugh-out-loud funny at the same time.

Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.

It is encouraging that the film ends so strongly.Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a particularly memorable film

Well, normally, I won't watch anything with an IMDb rating of less than 6.0. I was watching cable yesterday, and saw this had already started, unaware of the 4.5 rating it earned on IMDb. And you know what? The movie was pretty damn funny. Having grown up in a big family, and moving away...I'm not sure, maybe it's the similarity of background with Roscoe. But there are some funny bits, good repartee, and just an enjoyable flick. Certainly as good, if not better than ML's other work (exception: BB 2). James Earl Jones, Michael Duncan, Cedrick, Vanessa, I mean that these are entertaining people (granted, no Oscars here, but what did you expect?). Bottom line: no football on TV, and with no other good movies on, this was out-loud funny, and I didn't once find myself channel surfing (but I did miss the first 15 minutes). Enjoy!

A successful self-help L.A. talk show host (Martin Lawrence) is been invited to his parents (James Earl Jones and Margaret Avery) 50th anniversary of marriage. But he hasn't seen his parents or his family members for years. He brings his 15 minute of fame soon to be wife (Joy Bryant) and his son (Daman Roberts) to the deep south in Georgia for a family get-together. But he didn't realized that his competitively obsessed cousin (Cerdic the Entertainer) and his long-time crush (Nicole Ari Parker) would be there for the 50th anniversary as well.Written and Directed by Malcolm D. Lee (The Best Man) made an entertaining comedy that manages to be quite funny and quite silly as well. Some of the cast members (Including Michael Clarke Duncan, Mike Epps and Mo'nique) seems to be having an great time. Although the movie does go far too long towards the end. But it manages to be still watchable and there's one unforgettable funny gag that involves two dogs. Fans of the stars will enjoy this one best. (*** 1/2 out of *****).

I thought the movie was funny for the most part. My main problem with the movie was with Amy the dumb "white" Girlfriend. With the whole cast being black why was her role even needed? In the world today if it had been a white cast and any other race it would have been a raciest movie. Guess it is different when it is the "man" being made fun of. But other than that gripe about the movie I did find the family fighting funny in how kids are usually so competitive with in families. I also thought the main character waited a little to long to check his girlfriend. In my family the first signs of disrespect would have got her to calm down.

Finally! I said. A movie I can rate as not just a little, but far superior to comedies with mostly all African-American casts, including all prior formula Martin Lawrence comedies, beauty/barber shops, etc. Although it did not rise to the heights still claimed by Eddie Murphy at his best, I laughed out loud a lot -- not easy when you're always stressed out and looking for a laugh. I thought MoNique was hilarious. Those moviegoers that always get up and walk out to beat the traffic when the credits start rolling would have missed some of this movie's most hilarious scenes. I am a peaches-and-cream light-skinned older lady living for decades in a country with 95% shades of coffee-with-cream to ebony population. So while I am aware of the usually subtle, sometimes overt, discrimination between lighter and darker shades of my sisters and bros, I didn't see it in this movie or in any of the other movies referenced regarding Roscoe's decision to choose the lighter or darker-skinned girl. I'd watch it again, but then I only pay US$1.37 for a one night rental. The writer/director is to be commended for doing a lot with a small budget but what good fortune for him to assemble such a really great cast. Kudos to all. Definitely recommended.
