There's a more than satisfactory amount of boom-boom in the movie's trim running time.

Spider-Man works because of its focus on the vulnerable nature of human relationships and not necessarily its few but very emotionally intense action sequences. There is an attractive balance here and a plot not offering too much explosions and try-hard dialogue which in my opinion is way too common in this genre. The comedic parts feels spontaneous and not overstuffed like in many other similar movies. The casting is in my opinion perfect. Tobey Maguire really gives Peter Parker this honest tenderness and sensitivity which seemed very believable and frankly quite endearing at times. This is especially evident when sharing screentime with the lovely Kirsten Dunst. The chemistry between these two were really something! The webaction in this is the greatest I've seen in any movie about Spider-Man. The beautiful emotional dance of Peter Parker swinging through the city with the gravitional effects making it look like he actually has to make an effort jumping about is a treat to watch. It looks quite realistic to me. This was for some reason (?) not replicated in the two sequels where it instead looked visually unappealing in its CGIness in my opinion. The greatest superhero movie for me after Batman Begins. I unfortunately don't enjoy the critically acclaimed sequel Spider-Man 2 (2004) as much even though that one is pretty good as well. What Raimi really got right in the first two movies were the drama and the dialogue between the characters, the action to me was never the center of this movie despite its superhero title. So all in all, a great emotional drama with relatable, likeable and believable characters mixed with some spontaneous humoristic elements and some beautiful actionscenes which never felt tiring or overdone. A classic in my book.

Sure, at times 'Spider-Man (2002)' is a little cheesy and perhaps even border-line camp, but this is big-budget blockbuster film-making with flair. Sam Raimi's distinct directing style is present and appreciated, even if it is reined in a little. It brings to life a colourful comic-book world in a believable, entertaining way and it's much better than the washed-out, generic stuff we so often see nowadays. The piece can be melodramatic on occasion but it also isn't afraid to get dark, with some sequences actually being pretty brutal (I'll refer you to the final fight between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin, who's defeat is wince-inducing to say the least) and highlighting the dangers of the occupation well, while never losing sight of the heart of the character. The flick is incredibly well-made and, for me, still holds up. It's a true highlight of the genre; a blast from start to finish. 9/10

Maguire is the best Spidey as of Homecoming. This movie has great FX and action AND it brought a Hulk-sized helping of funny. The entire cast did a great job! Not to say all roles should have been included. The amount of soap in this web opera could clean up all the hillbillies in Kentucky. I guess if you're a 12 y/o girl or a lonely, middle-aged woman MJ might be likable but otherwise she's just obnoxious. So much so as to keep knocking me out of the story. All 3 of Raimi's Spidey flicks are hurt by this as well as his use of endless screeching. Seriously, does he hate his audiences? Everything else is good enough to make this a yearly watch for me.
