Wonderfully offbeat film!
Fanciful, disturbing, and wildly original, it announces the arrival of a fresh, bold voice in American cinema.
The joyful confection is coated in a sparkly gloss, bright enough to gleam from the darkest, most cynical corners.
There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
Yeah, North Shore is awesome. It's the greatest movie ever. Seriously. It's good in a cult way...I've watched this movie probably 100 times in the past 10 years. It's the best, and that fact that they rereleased it on DVD with interviews and deleted scenes shows that I'm not the only person who thinks its cool...I think every surfer has probably seen it at least once, even if just for the hell of it. There are about 1000 quotable lines in North Shore. Who ever wrote the script is awesome. The character "Turtle" has some of the best lines in the movie. Also, the music is really cool in 80s sort of way. I even think there's a Journey song at the end. I wonder if there's a soundtrack somewhere out there...
Come on, people! the "Surfin' movie" comprises one of the most worn-out of all genres! There is nothing new about this- the only differences I can see between junk like this and the Annette Funacello "beach party" films of the early 1960s are are that 1.)those earlier films were pure comedy with a little drama and this one is the opposite, and 2.)those flicks were generally set in southern Cali. The scenery is nice, and if you like to gaze at blond, "surfin' dude" muscleboys, this will do it for you (being gay, I do.) Otherwise, pick-up a copy of "Beach Blanket Bingo" or "How to Stuff a Wild Bikini."
One of the worse surfing movies I've ever seen. This movie is so bad I don't know where to begin-- Okay, let's start with the premise - some dude from the mainland who barely knows how to surf travels to Hawaii and enters a big wave contest which he more or less expects to win. A good analogy for those who don't surf would be a that of a grossly overweight chain smoker slapping on a pairs of running shoes and entering the LA Marathon with expectations of winning. No way! And, the contest is held on The North Shore which conjures up images of 15+ foot waves, but contest day the waves are maybe 6 foot. The acting? What acting? If you must see this woof see it on TV, don't waste your money renting it. If you want to see a pretty good surfing movie - granted it is flawed, but that's another story - rent Big Wednesday.
This movie is a treat from the beginning to the very end. If you were a child of the 80's, this one is right up your alley. Matt Adler who is the main character in this movie is a very underrated actor. If you do go out and rent this one, you will be very surprised. This one is a must see.
