The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;

Yes, absolutely, there is fun to be had, as well as many, many things to go boom, all amid an atmospheric urban jungle.

EAST SIDE SUSHI is a modest film with great intentions, some freshman bumps, and enough predictability to hold it back from greatness. It's a great watch, but gets issue-laden and doesn't find unique solutions for presenting ore resolving them.Lead actor Diana Elizabeth Torres delivers her role with magnetism and genuineness. She's a promising talent and I hope to see her a lot. Visiting her IMDb page, I noticed IMDb still refers to female actors as "actresses." Time for them to retire that term in the same box as "negro" and "retarded." The scene in which ethnicity of the Asian men in the sushi bar is addressed is probably its best moment. It unravels the real reason our protagonist can't get ahead.Yutaka Takeuchi possesses a lot of magnetism and never overplays his hand, even though his role isn't written with a great deal of uniqueness. He makes a great leading man, though it would be good to see him liberated from such typical-Asian-male depiction. He's quite dashing and manages to telegraph interest below a simmer.To its credit, East Side Sushi made me ravenous, with a great desire to try sushi with fresh spicy elements.

A wonderful surprise from the West Coast!The Port Washington N.Y. library showed this film, which I had never heard of, last night, and I was delighted by the story, the actors and the director's work.This is a film I would recommend to all of my friends. It is very truthful about how real people manage their differences in culture and background. Juana's life as a single mother, and working with her father to support her daughter reflect the experience of many young women I know. This simple story points the way for those who choose to learn about people different from themselves and working together with mutual respect.I was happy to see that the movie avoided so many of the "working with others" clichés. The actors and the director made the story feel authentic and real.

I really enjoyed this movie and found it very thought provoking. It's not every day that a movie comes out that addresses race, gender inequality, and low-income families. The movie starts a little slow but is totally worth the watch and I would recommend watching this with your daughter and discussing equal pay, gender discrimination, and diversity once it's over. I was a little suspicious that the movie may be too cheesy but it turned out to be a very nice flick. The characters felt very authentic and since I live in Maine it exposed me to some ways of life that I am not familiar with. I also think this would be a great classroom movie that could inspire a lot of great conversations and a discussions.

This was a completely enjoyable movie. The script was well written, the acting was superb, and the cinematography was great. Even the sound, which sometimes suffers outside of Hollywood, was perfect. My only complaint is that I am not a fan of hand-held camera, but I understand that it is a legitimate technique, and it actually pulled me in during one scene, which is unusual.One of my favorite parts about this movie is that the "moral" is a little ambiguous and isn't hammered home. Hollywood movies are always so black-and-white with good guys and bad guys, which is nothing like real life. East Side Sushi is much more subtle and realistic about themes like racism, gender bias, and social class. It is very refreshing.I ended up discussing this movie for hours afterwards, and recalling some of the great scenes, which is unusual and definitely the sign of great filmmaking. I very highly recommend East Side Sushi!
