Grotesque (2009)

The first must-see film of the year.

It is both painfully honest and laugh-out-loud funny at the same time.

The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

The film may be flawed, but its message is not.

Yep, it's sick ... & twisted.It's a simple premise of a one-track minded, everyday, torture-loving psycho. Sure, people have complained that there's no plot. I disagree - I've certainly seen less plot in some Hollywood movies which people have raved about & in any case, this one never pretends to be anything deep, spiritual or all that challenging. It is exactly what it aims to be & it does what it aims to do - horrify & sicken (& it does that very well). The gore & the characters are believable (unlike so, so many of it's cinematographical brethren, from all parts of the globe) & it's cold, hard, cruel, unforgiving & relentless. People might compare this with the Guinea Pig films but this is so much better having had some money, talent & (yes it is there) a story.My only complaint is the section shortly before the ending. What the HELL is that all about?! Just because it's Japanese, does it have to conform or kowtow to the comic stereotypes of the culture?! It's totally against the nature & character of the film & in my opinion would ruin an otherwise Top 10 Most Disturbing Films of all time.If you can mentally ignore that section (& you can't miss what I'm talking about when you see it) then this film is just what you're looking for if you are mentally deranged or borderline (if not actually) sociopathic/psychopathic ... or like me, 'enjoy' & actively seek out the sickest of the sick.

Grotesque is a challenge of the visual senses, horror for the visually challenged, where at one point at to stop, then resumed viewing it later. The plot is simple, yet from the doctor's crazed point of view, the premise is rather intriguing. A young innocent couple who are going steady, I guess, after dining out, are kidnapped by this brilliant maniacal surgeon, who has them tied up in his basement, what have you and tortures the living f..k out of them. His reasons are, for his own sick entertainment, to see how much they can endure or hold out, before they give up, and accept the inescapable fate of death. Also he wants to test their love against each other. I'm not gonna tell you what he does to em', but it's a lot to take. I'll leave that to the imagination of us sick ones to conjurer thoughts and images. For some of you, you'll be screaming for a re watch of Audition or even Hostel, which would come as a relief, as it would a comedy, after trying to get through this. This is a movie, you don't undermine for it's shocking violence, where each sick torturous act out shocks the last (some torturous methods, mirroring the ones in Daddy's Little Girl), and don't think for a second, cause of it's 73 minute running time, that it lessens the amount of horror you expect to see. You don't get away that easy. Actually in it's early part, I was actually disappointed as awaiting the real moments of shocking violence, where I guess my expectations were fading, or I was dubious, but with the buzz of that chainsaw sounding, I was quickly corrected. It's a film, really for the toughest of the senses. I'm not kidding. I'm never been so unnerved or discomforted by a film such as this, truly my heart was beating a lot through this intense view. This unsettling view isn't helped, when the actors don't overact. They put just the right amount of acting into their believable characters. One shocking tease to the film, involves a scene which at first, you don't think is a dream, which for one victim counts as a double whammy of a downer. This whole merciless film has nasty intentions, a lot of people will find it repellent, where the stronger ones will see the view through. The burial scene of our ill fated lovers at the end was memorably bizarre, it's actually the strongest image of the film, I can't get out of my head. But with all I've said, what it all boils down to is a movie almost wholly based on torture, saved for two scenes. This doesn't constitute for good horror, but for it's qualities to shock, unnerve and intensify, I must praise this nasty piece of horror, for what is, despite it's degrading or immoral themes, upon two human beings. God forbid, this one spawns a sequel, I for one, don't think I could stomach it.

I had to put a review out there for this movie. I read the reviews before I watched this and they are VERY MISLEADING. I had expected a pure torture/porn movie with no story, so I have to say I was PLEASANTLY SURPRISED WITH THIS MOVIE AND HOW GOOD THE STORY WAS. I almost didn't even watch it because I don't like boring torture movies, so I left this one for a while thinking it was pure gore. Nothing could be further from the truth. This is the most thought provoking gore movie you will ever see.Maybe people just didn't get this movie, as there are too many FALSE reviews on this movie, most likely from people who obviously did not watch the entire movie. This movie is not for the average person. You must have an open mind and be interested in Psychology to really enjoy this movie. This movie has a VERY GOOD STORY to it, and definitely has a plot as well. I don't want to spoil anything, but there is a lot more going on in this movie than just torture. This movie is a straight up psychological MASTERPIECE. The main character, is a very interesting one indeed. You will be drawn in from the start, and want to finish this one until the end to see what happens! The ending also has a shocking twist to it.This movie is NOT all about gore and violence, like other people so falsely claimed. Yes there is lots of it, far more than movies like "A Serbian Film" so if you cannot handle that, then go watch SESAME STREET or MY LITTLE PONY instead. Grotesque is a very interesting and thought provoking movie throughout. The gore scenes are also very well made. They don't look fake and there is some very mean stuff going on in this movie. This movie could be considered straight from the devil, and my warning is to those who scar easily should NOT watch this. The main character in this movie is among the most sick and evil characters I've ever had the pleasure of viewing in a film. The acting is very good as well. There is LOTS of Dialogue in this film believe it or not, even though at some points the characters are bound and gagged. I just can't believe the bad reviews this movie got, and then CRAP movies like AFTERMATH get all good reviews. Aftermath had absolutely NO story what so ever and was totally boring and could not even hope to compare to this one in terms of gore, which is supposedly what Aftermath's strength was. Grotesque delivers where all the others fail...If you like extreme, sick and evil psychological thrilling movies, then this is a MUST SEE.

A young couple are shown on their first date at a restaurant. They smile and exchange pleasantries, both are quite shy and when they walk together on the side walk, they are assaulted and abducted by a stranger. The couple find themselves securely restrained in a basement. A man begins the fun by sticking a screwdriver into the male victims stomach, then he cuts his tongue and rapes the girl. He cuts off her nipples and one arm. After further cutting of various body parts, he moves the suffering couple to what looks like a hospital room and cares to their wounds with medical like expertise. After some much needed recuperation, it's back to the dungeon for more mutilation. He cuts out the mans intestines and strings them to hook and thus begins a contest of endurance and loyalty to his date. If I haven't discouraged your curiosity yet, well watch the film to find out how it ends.
