Jason and his wife, Sarah, leave their adopted home of Shanghai and travel to Vancouver, British Columbia, for his uncle's funeral, staying with his Aunt Mei. Already disoriented, Jason and Sarah are unnerved when their son, Sam, begins seeing ghosts and violent deaths. After Sam is hospitalized, Sarah consults with a pharmacist who's well-informed about Chinese mythology and who tells her that supernatural forces threaten her son.

The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.

Watching it is like watching the spectacle of a class clown at their best: you laugh at their jokes, instigate their defiance, and "ooooh" when they get in trouble.

THEY WAIT is an entirely routine ghost film in which a couple discover that their young son is being haunted by a vengeful female ghost. We've seen this sort of stuff a zillion times before, and on the face of it this is no different to the normal sort of fare; some below par CGI effects are hardly the thing to instill confidence in the viewer. And yet, and yet...THEY WAIT is a surprising film. Surprising because the writing surrounding the reason for the ghost's presence is actually decent for once. It's clearly been well thought out, and it's a story that mixes together forced labour, murder, and the hungry ghost festival. Despite the proliferation of Asian ghost films over the last couple of decades, I actually found the back story to be fresh and engaging. It doesn't make THEY WAIT a perfect film, but it is worth a look for fans of the genre on that basis alone.

Sarah (Jaime King), her husband, Jason, and their six year old son, Sammy, go to Vancouver for Jason's Uncle Raymond's funeral. During their stay at Aunt Mei's house, Sammy starts seeing ghosts. He ends up in a coma at the hospital after nosing around the basement of Uncle Raymond's warehouse. Soon, Sarah sees them, too. Desperate for answers, she visits a local pharmacist who shows her a sketch of the spirit with Sammy - her skeletal hand reaching for his exposed heart - that he drew a year ago. He tells her the spirit has imprisoned her son's soul and Sarah has until dawn on the last day of Ghost Month to find out what the spirit's motives are or Sammy will be lost forever. The R rating has me baffled. There are some disturbing images but not near as gory as The Grudge and that's rated PG-13. There is no sex or nudity, not even a side boob. I don't even recall a single swear word. This is more mystery & suspense than it is horror, in my opinion. The scares are good but the acting is terrible. Pei-pei Cheng as Aunt Mei and the adorable Henry O as Sammy are very believable but King is a whiny mess and Chen doesn't understand the use of facial expressions. I'm Asian, my husband is Caucasian, and we have two Amerasian daughters. I'm rating this on the low side because the movie was a letdown and only partially entertaining, not because I have an issue with inter-racial couples.

The main aspect that distinguishes a good horror film from a bad one, is the story. Excellent special effects, top-notch acting, and terrifying scares cannot save a horror movie with an awful story. "They Wait" has alright special effects, mediocre acting, pleasantly surprising scares, and a story that is minutely above average. As stylish and atmospheric as it is, "They Wait" suffers from a typical horror downfall: a super strong start that slowly fades as the film progresses. The beginning introduces the film wonderfully, yet eventually falls somewhere between kind of scary and just plain weird, as the film goes on. Following the same formula, the story starts out as intriguing, yet quickly becomes tedious and somewhat misleading.I would write a lot more about this film, if there was anything more to say about it. Nothing very special really happens in this movie; it's the run-of-the-mill ghost story with an Asian twist. In conclusion, I recommend this film if you're looking to kill some time, however don't expect much from it. This is nothing you haven't seen before, and you could easily go about your life without having seen this film.

I found this film to be a delight to watch. I like my horror films but so many these days fail to give me a scare, However this one gave me quite a few jumps. The storyline was excellent and the film flowed nicely and was the perfect length approx 90 minutes. I also found the acting to be of a very high standard in this film, although I knew none of the actors in it. If you are going to watch this film then may i recommend it to be watched at a very late time. Get the popcorn out and the hoover because you are gonna be jumpy. I cannot understand why this film has an average of 4.4 (It seems some people are just far too critical) I am giving this a 10/10 so go watch it now you will not be disappointed
