Fantastic!
The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.
The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
Frankenstein's Army (2013): Found footage Horror Film but it's WW2 footage. Dmitri an army propagandist is provided with a state of the art camera and is attached to a Red Army reconnaissance squad at the front. It opens with the usual shots of soldiers hamming it for the cameras, but also shows the outcuts where the troops don't behave so well. The squad come across some strangely mutilated bodies and really bizarre skeletons. Further on they discover a dead German soldier whose body seems to be fused to an odd fighting machine. The real horror begins when they reach an apparently abandoned building but are attacked by man-machine hybrids. The battle ensues and sonn Dmitri comes in contact with the mad scientist in charge of the operation - Dr Frankenstein. Some good cinema verité shots both in ordinary battle and fighting the monsters. Clashes in tunnels gives this the feel of Aliens without being too derivative. Some real thought went into the creation of the hybrids, slashers, guns, hooks attached to arms, these are literally steampunk cyborgs. One even has an aircraft engine complete with propellor affixed to his upper torso. Sounds crazy but perhaps it is a reflection on the bizarre medical experiments the nazi doctors performed in Concentration Camps. Frankenstein wishes to bring about a literal meeting of minds by melding two lobes from different people together.Directed by Richard Raaphorst, written by Chris M. Mitchell and Miguel Tejada-Flores, Frankenstein's Army is an effective Horror/War drama, veined with dark humour but starts to drag a bit towards the end. 7/10. On Horror Channel.
Though not typically a "found footage" fan, this was one exception, because it lends to the horrific and claustrophobic feel of the film. This is top-notch, step above B-Movie horror for the costume and creature design alone. Highly recommended genre film, and one of the better to come out of the horror genre in some time.
We put it on expecting it to be cheesy, but eh, give it a try. My husband and I were pleasantly surprised, in fact, delighted! We are even going to watch it again. There are so many subtle details and things in the background or aren't directly addressed. The characters are believable, and the costuming is FANTASTIC! Sure somethings are a bit over the top but I don't think it took away from the movie but actually part of the charm. It's all shot 'Blair Witch' style, POV of a camera carried by the character(s). While I wouldn't call it terrifying, it was scary and got that adrenaline pumping, and usually we're stoic movie watchers but even we had to do the tentative 'oooooo' and those little spazs you do when a character needs to do something - which, a huge credit to this movie, is not full of idiot characters you yell at the screen for being an idiot. What an enjoyable ride.
The overall thought behind the film is great and many of the actual 'zombots' were incredibly thought out. They appeared very realistic and made me jump on a few occasions which is exactly what you would expect when taking the genre into consideration. However, the execution and final result did not live up to my expectations. After reading many reviews I was excited to watch this film but I found it to be very mediocre and lost interest on many occasions. I couldn't stand the way in which it was shot as it gave off a very amateur effect. More suitable for people who like to watch basic films that don't require a lot of thinking. I wouldn't recommend this film to anyone and would have to be pinned down to watch it again.
