Memorable, crazy movie
Good start, but then it gets ruined
I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.
One of the best movies of the year! Incredible from the beginning to the end.
Brilliant film,ignore the haters...brolin is a legend
Just trying to see an excellent Oldboy and finally saw the wrong Old boy of 2013 My rating is fair enough for this movie My next Oldboy is going to be the right one!!!
Seriously I was never a fan of original Oldboy(2003) movie..but this Spike Lee movie was a blast.Josh Brolin gave one of his best performance as an arrogant and carefree person who realizes his mistakes when he was confined to a small room for 20 years. The action sequences are very great. Sharlto Copley as the antagonist was best suited for the role..especially his smile-less expressions can't be matched by anyone. He is shown very confident on his future course of action that his patience level at every scene is quite justified.Of course we can never forget Mr. Samuel L Jackson as Chaney-the kidnapper. His comic timing (which was actually not portrayed as comic) is also praisable.Specially the conversation with Joe while his torture i.e "I swear, I don't know nothing'! I swear before God and eight motherfuckin' white people! " was very well timed. But the climax and end of the movie steals the show when he handover all the money to mia and go back to chaney for imprisonment shows the salvation achieved by Joe Doucett. In all it was a very satisfied movie and expect a sequel to the same.
I mean the original film is pretty intense and has a unique atmosphere. It is weird and twisted in a lot of ways but it is poetic and beautiful and also makes sense for 90% of the run time. And I absolutely get why it accumulated a significant fan base as well as positive reviews and recommendations. This thing however is fundamentally broken. Everything is either rushed or forced, or crudely copied off of the original but makes no sense. The story is also dumbed down for the American audience (I'd take offense on that if I were I part of said audience) and "relieved" of innumerable artistic features of the original film. Please, if you value your time, do not watch this garbage. Just pick up the original Oldboy of 2003 and enjoy a bizarre but somehow still beautiful story.
