A retired farmer and widower in his 70s, Alvin Straight learns one day that his distant brother Lyle has suffered a stroke and may not recover. Alvin is determined to make things right with Lyle while he still can, but his brother lives in Wisconsin, while Alvin is stuck in Iowa with no car and no driver's license. Then he hits on the idea of making the trip on his old lawnmower, thus beginning a picturesque and at times deeply spiritual odyssey.

It is not deep, but it is fun to watch. It does have a bit more of an edge to it than other similar films.

The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one

There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.

For me this was pure torture to sit through this movie that was getting such rave reviews and being proclaimed as such great art. It was slow with meaningful filming such as a ball rolling by slowly in one scene. From the dialog, to filming, to the story line it was just not well written or filmed in my opinion. As many rave reviews as it got I assumed it would be an enjoyable experience but what I got instead was me wishing I had picked any movie other than this one. If you like watching a tractor and farmland for many scenes and such art as a ball rolling slowly by then you will love this movie. If the repetitiveness of the same looking scenes over and over gets tiresome and slow story line and dialog then think twice as there are few movies I ever get up and walk out of and this was one I wanted to leave but didn't.

David Lynch is one of my a-list directors, although Mulholland Dr. is the only one I have ever seen, when my interpretation told me what's it about,I was stunned , from time to time I'm awake in morning ,I know some thing appeared in my dream is what appeared in Mulholland Dr. ,it's awesome. The straight story is my second journey with David Lynch, a totally different experience , but the result is same , stunned. With several split-screens ,Lynch briefly tells the condition about the Straight and his living environment, which raise a question in my head then , how Lynch can weave a 2 hours movie after that? A long journey From Iowa to Mississippi , an old ill-man with his Mower? sounds boring.Alvin Straights' (Farnsworth) first attempt terminated due to the broken of the mower , but when he begins his second attempt, the story start hit me bit by bit , come across a wayward young girl who are running away and the Bundle of sticks fable , which may be a little cliché to me in other place , is now perfectly fit in this story , a nice family helped him when his Mower broke again after a dangerous drive , and the beautiful narrative of the WWII sniper story , lots of detail on the trip , just like a fantastic picture unfold bit by bit slowly , quietly , and emotionally , but the most beautiful part still left at the end of story , when his brother ask him when he saw the almost broken Mower ,'you just drive that thing long way to see me ?',My eyes has the same effect with Straights' brother , my heart was moved totally. In my Cultural desert nation, I'm proud to say that I still be capable of have some feeling in this movie ,and I have to thank David Lynch to let me know it

73-year-old Alvin Straight (Richard Farnsworth) from Laurens, Iowa takes a tumble. His challenged daughter Rose (Sissy Spacek) is concerned. He won't let his doctor do tests. Then he receives word that his estrange brother Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton) had a stroke. He is determined to go see his brother in Wisconsin. He can't drive and there's no bus. So he decides to modify his lawn mower for the long trip. This is an interesting little indie. There are a lot of tiny oddities in this. First this is directed by David Lynch without any of his usual surreal touches. He is really gentle here letting Farnsworth do his acting. There are some quirky touches here and there. He puts in some beautiful music. Spacek makes an interesting choice with her stutter. She has a funny moment in the beginning. Alvin is an old self-reliant guy. He's charming in his old school ways. The story is funny and bitter sweet.

There have been countless road trip movies made over the years, some were great, a lot were not so great. This 1999 road trip movie is based on a true story... the story of an old man's determination to visit his sick brother. The problem is he cannot drive a car, so, he elects to take the trip driving a John Deer ride on mower. Given that premise. it could be mistaken for a comedy scenario, but it is definitely not. It is a warm and touching story that hold your interest for the entire journey. The great Richard Farnsworth plays Alvin Straight and his character portrayal is excellent. The people he encounters along the way and the awesome scenery make this movie work. The acting is natural and believable. Notable cast members include Sissy Spacek as Rose Straight (Alvin's daughter) and Harry Dean Stanton as Lyle (Alvin's brother). Although their roles are small, they shine as their characters. I have watched this movie several times.... it just works for me. There is nothing to dislike and there are a lot of life lessons to be learned from watching it. Sadly. this was to be Richard Farnsworth's final movie.. he couldn't have finished on a finer note.
