It is kind of odd why this franchise is still running, especially when it was 25 years since the first movie. And even more impressive since the movies were on a very steep downward hill with each passing movie beyond the first original "Tremors" movie. And now in 2015 we were subjected to a fifth installment into the franchise. But only this time we are outside of America, and it proves that the infestation of the graboids have spread to other countries as well. A good sense of evolution in terms of the franchise? Or an attempt of cashing in on a franchise that have already been milked dry? You decide...Regardless of that, then this fifth installment takes Burt Gummer (played by Michael Gross) - the only original member still left in the franchise - to Africa as his expertise experience in hunting graboids is requested by the African government. Here he has to work alongside with Travis B. Welker (Jamie Kennedy). Now, it was good enough to see Michael Gross return to this movie, but at the same time it just wasn't enough to really support this movie being made. And it didn't really help that the graboids themselves didn't really get much on-screen exposure, and they were just left to be a backdrop to the story. And I don't understand why the casting of Travis B. Welker went to Jamie Kennedy, weren't there anyone more talented willing to participate in the movie?"Tremors 5: Bloodlines" was a weak foray into the "Tremors" saga, and it was even weaker than the time they went back in time to tell the story of the graboids being present in the mid-1800s.Granted, I didn't have much of expectations to "Tremors 5: Bloodlines" because of the decline of the series with each movie. But still, it is something that I grew up with, so of course I had to watch this one too. Just don't expect too much from it, and it will turn out to be a generic and mediocre experience. Nothing much new to be had here that haven't already been used and established in the "Tremors" stories.

Michael Gross made his triumphant return to the Tremors franchise, as Burt Gummer, Graboid killer, this time traveling to South Africa with camera operator, Jamie Kennedy, to eradicate a new breed of an old adversary. Recruited by Daniel Janks from SA to find and capture a Graboid that murdered an archaeologist couple and slaughtered a poacher (who happened to unluckily fall into a cave housing it's offspring), Gross and Kennedy find more than they bargained for. Brandon Auret is the other poacher who witnessed his friend killed, a bit miffed with Gross' arrival. Yummy Pearl Thusi is a doctor (with a daughter often playing in a garden; the expected child in peril scenes involve her) who Kennedy takes a liking to (and who could blame him?!), also desired by chief of security, Rea Rangaka. Ian Roberts has a memorable part as a copter pilot who is brothers of a feather with weapons expert Gummer, surviving a Graboid swallowing when it spits him out! This Graboid has tentacle tongues with heads on them that extend long distance and it can spin out of the earth into the air as if shot from a cannon and gulp victims whole! The mix of practical and computerized effects aren't too shabby considering the budget available, especially cool are the flame-ass bird-like creatures that often swoop down and snatch away human victims. Gross is an absolute blast, deservedly the star of the franchise now. While this won't compare in quality to the first film--my opinion one of the best monster films of it era and horror comedies of the 90s--it certainly breathes fun life into a franchise many hadn't thought much about lately. Kennedy is thankfully tolerable, and his courage helps make him acceptable particularly when he braves the offspring cave and rides a dirt bike to distract the main Graboid. Pearl with her bow and arrow skills come in handy during one Graboid kill involving a burning Jeep and direct shot to its gas tank. Lots of guns and explosions, as expected with Gummer running around. The location shooting is similar to the previous entries, but I can't envision a Tremors movie not in the desert. Memorable sequence involves Gummer trapped in a cage as a lion approaches, eventually urinating on him! Kennedy's secret involving Gross comes out of left field, and Gross' reaction is a hoot. Chopper missiles bomb a cave, creatures yank folks into their bellies, off into the sky, or off screen, with plenty of anticipated monster carnage. The plot doesn't escape familiarity, but exciting casting and no shortage of action with a pace that doesn't catch a breath compensates.

Just when you thought it was safe to switch to the Sci-Fi Channel, look who's back on the block! TREMORS! Michael Gross and Jamie Kennedy star in the newest installment of one of my favorite film series. Directed by actor turned director, Don Michael Paul who has helmed a series of direct to video sequels including Jarhead 2, Lake Placid 4, Sniper 5 and coming soon Kindergarten Cop 2 (I know what you're thinking, but bear with me), Tremors 5: Bloodlines tells an extremely familiar story centered around Burt Gummer and his new videographer assistant as they hunt down extra large versions of the subterranean ground grapplers we all know and love across the South African planes. If that sounded a lot like the plot of Tremors 2 with a few proper names flipped around, you'd be right but if you also think this movie is straight up garbage, you might be surprised.I know that I've already front loaded this review with a lot of bad stuff but let me now tell you what is good about it. First of all the story is way better written than you'd expect it to be with plenty of nods and asides to the original film and all it's sequels. The CGI is also way better this go round than an any of the other Tremors sequels. That coupled with competent cinematography and pretty decent acting from the supporting cast makes this movie a little better than your standard B-movie fare. In short, somebody really came to play! It's not perfect however, the pacing is a little squirrelly at times, it references a few other movies a little too closely and the ending is not quite all aces but on the whole it's an enjoyable small movie that's just inches away from being a legit film and if you're a Tremors fan, you'll really enjoy it.All in all, this B-movie is pretty rad and believe it or not, it's bordering on badass at times. In my opinion it's the best of the sequels and definitely worth a peek this Halloween season. Tremors 5 earns itself a hearty 3... out of 5.

Tremors 4 wasn't a great movie, but it had some excitement in it. The same cannot be said for Tremors 5, which has remarkably little in the way of thrills and suspense. There's also not much in the way of story or character. This time around it's basically just the Burt Gummer show, with other characters ranging from bland to irksome. And because the story soon separates into two separate threads that connect poorly, there is no real sense of momentum. And with no character development, you don't have much reason to care if these people live or die. There are a bunch of logic issues as well, and all sorts of clichés, but I don't need to name everything wrong with this movie. The point is, nothing is done very well.At the same time, it is perfectly watchable and keeps moving. So there's that. But if this is the best they can do, it's probably time to shut this thing down.
