Sadly Over-hyped

Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.

I am a Ethan Hawke fan and have pretty much seen every movie of his (Sinister is my favorite). But I've felt like he doesn't go action movies much and if you've seen movies like Assault on Precinct 13 or Purge, you know he can do action. So yeah, 24 hours might not be ground-breaking plot-wise, but it does action well. Story is cliched but well acted. Hawke plus other caste, all good, except for the Chinese actress who can't act and is there cause Hollywood movies are now funded by Chinese and need to make money over there. I think action is definitely what keeps this movie flowing and makes it worth sitting through. A good popcorn flick.

'24 Hours to Live' has all the makings of a straight-to-DVD actioner but with Ethan Hawke in the lead. Not only is Ethan Hawke's likeability worthy of giving this film a go, but by the time the action starts, you'll realise that actually it is well staged, well edited and efficiently directed in comparison to most other C-movie types. The plot is pretty basic, supporting characters are thinly written and your emotions are unlikely to be stirred, but Ethan Hawke imbues his character with enough to ensure there's weight to the story alluded to by its on-the-nose title. It's a typically assured performance from a terrific actor, and the flashback sequences give enough reason to keep invested in his efforts, and particularly the John Wick inspired shootouts. Overall, if you come looking for solid action, you'll walk away suitably fulfilled. The choreography is nice, the action is easy to follow, and it's dished out with a slick edge that makes the generic drama easy to overlook. 7/10.

For what was intended as an action picture, "24 Hours to Live" was slow-paced from start to finish. The languid flashback sequences and the extenuated close-ups evoked an uneven tempo to this poorly paced film.Ethan Hawke plays the mercenary Travis Conrad, a hired killer in the employ of the nefarious Red Mountain organization. While he did not realize it during his employment with the group, Red Mountain is an evil, militant group engaging in mass murder and horrific human experiments. By using the human guinea pigs, Red Mountain has discovered a way to temporarily bring dead people back to life, albeit for only a 24-hour period. It is suggested without filling in the details that this resurrection process is to change the face of warfare. Red Mountain also has one-half of the Senate in its hip pocket.Conrad himself becomes one of the lucky people brought back to life for one day, after he received fatal gunshot wounds. But, upon further review, Conrad decides to spend his last day on the planet in taking revenge on his old employer and saving a young mother and child in the process."24 Hours to Live" was intended as a stylish action film. But it lacked both style and action. The drawn-out and inconsequential conclusion was once again bogged down in flashbacks that killed the dramatic tension and ended the film not with a bang, but with a whimper.

24 Hours to Live is a semi decent action thriller film. A little better than I expected for a straight to dvd type of movie. A plot that could have been better. Involving a hitman trying to save the victim's life. And going after the bad guys in a shoot em up type of movie. What I like about the film is the action sequences were better than I expected. I wont be comparing this to John Wick movies, which are still by far superior. But since the film was done by the same production studio. The action gun shoot out scenes are entertaining. There is a couple of car chases and shoot out scenes that makes this film worth watching. What did not work with the film is almost about everything else from a terrible script, dull characters, and a boring plot. The script is terrible with bad dialogue. The script also fails on giving interesting character depths. Especially, Travis (Ethan Hawke) who is an assassin for hire on a company that is being testified against. They hire him to go eliminate the witness. When his attempt fails, and they were able to save him. Only giving him 24 hours to live and to do his job. He attempts to go after the bad guys that betrayed him. The script does give his character some background. A history of a tragic past about his family. Making him a man with nothing to lose. His character is tedious. Same with Xu Qing, a bodyguard that is assigned in protecting the witness. Also, the plot is boring. There have been several films involving a hitman turning things around to protect the witness against a company that hired him. Plus Travis partner within the company Morrow (Paul Anderson) who hired him to do the job. They both served for the same company and had history. But his character was also lacking in depth. Overall, 24 Hours to Live is a bad film. If it was not for the car chases and gun shoot out action. The characters are dull and lacking depth. It has terrible dialogue. And the plot is cliché and predictable. I do not recommend the film unless your looking for a cheap action film with no plot than I ll recommend it as a rental.I rate the film 2.5 out of 5 stars.
