Absolutely Fantastic
The first must-see film of the year.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
First, let's address the elephant in the room. This micro budget independent film won't be winning awards for sound or lighting design. It was shot with very little money, so the production values are very low. That being said, this is an extremely well written script with solid acting, wonderful characters, and a heart that is bigger than the sum of its parts. I was really impressed with the structure of this comedy. Excellent scene progression with tons of funny quotable lines (the "no one should be alone on their wedding night" is one of my favorites). It reminded me of watching the early work of Woody Allen, Billy Wilder, and Neil Simon. The work is a comedy of manners and doors neatly woven together with a smart, effective premise. If this is the kind of work that newcomer writer/director Matthew Wilson can put together with a microscopic budget, imagine the sort of material he could produce with studio backing. "The Virgins" is a fun, solid film, and I hope to see more like it from this crew.
