NYPD Detective Sara Pezzini's main goal in life was to bring down Tommy Gallo, the hitman who killed her father, her best friend, and eventually her partner. While chasing down one of Gallo's thugs, she acquires the Witchblade, an enchanted armored glove once used by Joan of Arc that deflects bullets, extends into bladed weapons, produces visions, and neatly compacts itself into a bracelet.

The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.

I totally disagree with the above comment. I LOVED the show and this TV series should be out on DVD! A shame really that the show was canceled due to one of the actor's alcoholism. I think the show had a really good premise; there were strong characters; and also a strong female lead. Its been 5 or 6 years since I last saw the show. I just wanted to say how I really hope this TV series gets put on DVD because I would buy it; and so would hundreds of other people; see Amazon.com customer reviews for Witchblade. Please put onto DVD. I think whoever gets this onto DVD would find that there are quite a few people who have been touched by the show and would love to be able to re-watch it.

This was a made-for-TV movie a few years back when comic book adaptations were just starting to make a name for themselves with films such as "X-Men" raking in all the cash at the box office. Unfortunately "Witchblade" is just another cash-in and not at all unique - it is supposedly based on a comic book of the same name, but in all actuality, it's just plain lame. (Hey, that rhymed!) Yancy Butler plays the lead character - a woman who inadvertently stumbles upon a magic "blade" that gives her superpowers to battle evildoers. Enter the Bad Guy Who Wants to Dominate the Earth and other comic book clichés - all in all it's pretty terrible. The acting isn't completely atrocious but it leaves a lot to be desired. The direction is poor and typically made-for-TV in style; however it's the script that is particularly bad - annoying, banal, and packed with really bad dialogue. The fact that this "film" spawned a TV series is kind of surprising because it is basically just a poor cash-in on a rather obscure comic book that I had never even heard of. (But then again, I don't read comics.) View at your own peril.

This movie is a b flick, and its sole purpose was to set up the possibility for a series... don't doubt this for one moment...but.. look at its strengths1) based on a good character from comic book land 2) acting for newbies is a good as it could get 3) it tugs on the heart strings of us all...4) ok Yancy is ... well.. she captures attention... I'm a Sci-Fi fan... Farscape is STILL my number one show, Witchblade is second, in a very short list... its tops for non Sci-fi and non comedy in my book... A little bit more about my book..Sci-Fi is: Buckaroo Banzai: Across the Eight Dimension, Doctor Who, Farscape, Star Trek (primarily The Next Generation)Comedy is: The Simpson's, SouthPark, Malcolm in the Middle, Family Guy, The Critic, CopsReality is: CopsWitchblade is: something else... I will definitely buy this IF and WHEN it comes out on DVD, and I WILL watch this series, so long as it keeps me engrossed like this movie did.If you are not sure, give it a try, you will probably be entertained; if not at least wishing YOU could be in control of a Witchblade.:)
