disgusting, overrated, pointless
This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.
A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.
The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
This mini series reaches a level of perfection not often found on modern television, let alone in six episodes. The acting is superb, particularly from the star, Stellan Scarsgård, who plays the title character River. He uses restraint that occasionally bursts through his usual reserve. The writing is glorious and creative with a big twist you don't expect. Again Scarsgård could've held court alone and with the writing and cinematography backing him up. But the terrific supporting cast adds an entirely new dimension to River the show and character. There's plenty of action to please those that need it. Yet it transcends your run of the mill detective show to please the biggest tv snob! I hope we'll see River again soon. Thank you Netflix for bringing this beauty to us across the pond!
I don't often give a 10 but I was left with no alternative after binge watching this amazing show. I was hooked after watching the first 15 minutes. A wonderful story line, well written dialogue and fabulous acting makes this stand out in its genre. I would highly recommend to all and have done so since watching it.
Throughly enjoy this series, worthy of a prequel. A great cast well written shame there's only one series
The plot was an interesting premise and the acting was very good but each episode was more depressing than the prior one. I kept watching expecting it to get better based on the really high reviews but it just didn't. John River was the most morose lunatic yet remained employed!?!? The action and story line developed very slowly and I found that extremely tedious. But the long lingering close ups of the depressed lead character really made it difficult to watch. Having sat through all six episodes I can only say I regret the waste of time. Netflix viewers gave it one star -- I will give more credence to their reviews in the future.
