I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.

Just saw this on TV. I knew from the caption summary that it was supposed to be a thriller but it wasn't until the middle of the movie that the suspense began to build. At least Gwyn seemed like a real person. She wasn't unbelievably dumb or pretentious. Her evil, manipulative mother-in-law was obviously just a fictitious character that probably never existed and Jessica played it that way. The best scene in the whole movie was when Gwyn slapped Jessica. The witch deserved far more and far worse, but at least she got something. I wouldn't watch this again. It wasn't over the top enough to just laugh it off as a comedy. Like most movies, it used up 2 more hours of my precious life.

I agree with several other reviewers that this movie is underrated here.It keeps your interest, especially if you like horses, and the contrast between hectic, noisy, frustrating, randomly violent, dirty, inhumane city life and the clean air and soothing charms of the "simple life" in the country (which now costs much more than most of us can afford).I think both Jessica Lange and Gweneth Paltrow handled their roles with aplomb. Anyone who's seen Lange in "Blue Sky" with Tommy Lee Jones will not be a bit surprised at her ability to successfully carry off a full-on lunatic.I think people may be a little put off by the happy ending from a lower budget, non-mainstream film, but what do I know?Well, I know I liked it more than it's rated on here, and I'd recommend it to friends. A masterpiece, it isn't, but I'd consider it entertaining and worthy of your time if you like mystery/thrillers set mostly in beautiful country surroundings with good acting.

Even way back in 1998, the question would have been a valid one: does the world really need yet another of the "mother in law hates the new daughter in law for taking her son away from her so she sets out to destroy her" movies? Really - hasn't this been done to death? Well, in 1998 somebody decided that, indeed, another one was needed - and the end result was this rather unoriginal story that doesn't do anything that other movies of this type haven't already done.Frankly, the only thing that saved this was the performance of Jessica Lange as Martha Baring, the obsessively jealous and controlling mother in law. Lange, I thought, did a good job with her character. At first, Martha seems almost normal and welcoming of her new daughter in law Helen (Gwyneth Paltrow). But she gradually becomes more and more menacing and by the end borders on the insane, and that was all brilliantly pulled off by Lange, who made an otherwise bland movie worth watching.Unfortunately, one superb performance can't save an otherwise weak movie. (4/10)

This could have been so much better and is one of those movies where a lack of direction comes to the fore. Its not very suspenseful when the director is unable to build suspense, case-in- point the end where Jackson does an about turn from being the doting son to never wanting to see his mother again quicker than you could say "cut". I'm also still trying to figure out how Jackson drove from a packed Churchill Downs racecourse in Kentucky to the farm in virginia in minutes (it would take me that long to find the car in the car park)! Some good points were the ageless Jessica Lange who was fairly convincing as the evil, scheming mother and Paltrow fans will be happy to know they can use the pause button to see her in her birthday suit. No doubt, this movie is in the $5 bins at walmart by now, leave it in there, this really isn't worth your time or money.
