North and South, Book I (1985)

The greatest movie ever!

Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.

There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.

Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable

I will be very short.The 1., 2. seasons = fantastic! The 3. = rubbish! How they could made such a bad, full of crap 3. season, I do not understand... It would had been better to remain only two seasons. The first two seasons were a great historical drama, but third? I don't know what to name it... No story, bad acting, previsibility, and political correctness pushed to the maximum... :( It seems as this movie does not have any script, but the actors were put to make up independent scenes, which they put together at the and...

As a little girl growing up in Charleston, I can remember all of the fuss during the filming of North and South. It not only lived up to the hype but exceeded it. It is still just as enjoyable to watch 30 plus years later and I can now enjoy it all over again with my children. This is a love story between George and Orry, two best friends who meet at West Point and eventually have to fight for their beliefs opposite each other in the Civil War. It follows their lives and the lives of their families as the world changing war takes place. The acting was excellent, the wardrobe was stunning, and you feel like you are living through this plot. For all of my fellow Patrick Swayze fans, in my opinion this showcases him at his finest. This movie does an excellent job of showing the struggles of both the north and the south without showing favoritism to either. It was a beautiful story showing the horror of slavery but also showing that not all southerners agreed with that of life. You felt deeply for all those involved (well, other than Bent, Justin, and Ashton). Do yourself a favor and watch this right now if you haven't already seen it! You'll be so glad that you did! With that said, I like to pretend that the last book/movie does not exist. I much prefer the ending of the original 1985 series.

North & South is the best ever Mini Series depicting the story of the American Civil War. Unlike Roots, which was also good, it showed the good and the bad of both sides and also the hypocrisy. It always annoys me when Lincoln is portrayed as a night in shining armor freeing the slaves. North & South shows how Lincoln was quite prepared to allow the South to keep their slaves. Another point was when James Read's character invites Patrick Swayze's character to visit his mill, Swayze notices the squalor the mill workers are living in and states that his Slaves live better than this. Read replies that they are free to leave if they want to. This was also a form of slavery and still happens today. Nice to see the stars of stage and screen of yesteryear in the program. James Stewart, Robert Mitchum, Elizabeth Taylor, Lloyd Bridges, Jean Simmons. The list is endless appearing with up and coming stars of today. Teri Garber, Forrest Whitaker. It is unbelievable. I wish that another series could be made like this about the American War Of Independence. Showing both the American side of the story and the British side. Also with top actors of past and present. I recommend you buy the DVD collection alongside with the sequel, Heaven And Hell, which is also very good.

liberal rewriting history..a hell lot of dishonest information about the South.but what i 'm concerned is the so called Marxist ideology: if someone is black, poor or stupid then he is honest and respectable.the film presents such stupid mentality as some kind of noble and righteous..people are not equal, although everyone can contribute to the society.we should judge a person according to how much positive effect he/she has on the society, not how much money he has or how much an underdog he has suffered from beingalso, this one compared to GWTW is totally immoral.. too many sex scenes, about every 10 or 15 minutes.everyone is a slut..it's sexually rewriting south tradition
