Based on the true story of the Burt family who seemed normal, upstanding members of the community but were actually deeply embedded in crime. The matriarch took in foster children who were subsequently molested and abused by her husband and children and she kept a woman enslaved and imprisoned in the basement for over twenty years until the woman's daughter managed to get to Rhode Island Attorney General David Morwitz and expose the horrors taking place in the Burt household.

A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."

It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.

Superb film dealing with a family that used the system to take full advantage and do the most horrendous things to people who were under their foster care. The film is marvelous as it is really a stinging indictment of the foster care system. That social worker saw all the symptoms of child abuse and chose instead to make notations, look at her watch and simply walk away.Kirstie Alley again proves that she is a magnificent dramatic actress as the devil of a mother. Teaching children how to steal, setting fire to real estate that she owned, having the most disgusting children herself, and married to a brute all come together to make such an outstanding film. The film is also a testimony to a criminal justice system that finally worked and meted out appropriate justice. This is a marvelous film which should be viewed by so many groups alike.

I liked this comment as it appreciated the fact it was well acted and true to life. To many people this would have seemed a far fetched tale but I experienced a horrific tale of this nature, adult mental brutality and conned by my own son with the advice and backing of a "Mrs Geck". My daughter and I watched it at the same time, I phone her and said have a look and tell me what you think, she immediately said "Bitch Anne" and it was so true to her character that when I do actually finish the script which is proving very painful to write, I want Kirsty to play her. My case raised much publicity 3 days at court and all the media, TV, News etc., Kathryn Knight did an excellent feature in the Daily Mail, but originally my own doctor did not believe me....... Kirsty is the person,,,,well acted. Well produced

This is a very horrible sad and depressing TRUE STORY, which makes it even worse to view. Kirstie Alley,(Brenda Geck),"Back by Midnight",'02, put her heart and soul into this horrible role and made you hate her over and over again. Will Patton,(Philip Rothman),"The Agency",'01 TV Series, acted his usual calm ways and was soft spoken, but very powerful in his building a case against Brenda Geck. It is a shame that such a person did exists and did so much mental and physical harm too so very many people's lives. It is a great film to alert the general public as to what can actually happen in their own neighborhoods or even your next door friend. It was nice to see Kirstie Alley give such a great performance in this very sick TRUE STORY!

I thought Kirstie Alley was awesome in this role. When foster daughter Marie runs away from the Geck family home in search of assistance, she finds no sympathetic ear. The Geck's are philanthropic pillars of their community, and on friendly terms with politicians and other high profile residents. In the beginning, you only catch glimpses of the Gecks true colors, so it is easy to see how they could charm such a great deal of people, even though they give the viewer an uneasy feeling. As the story unfolds, Brenda Geck (head of the house of horrors) slowly reveals herself. I'm wondering if they chose to do this movie now, because the Burts (who the movie was loosely based on) are up for parole? If you like "movies of the week," this is a great one for Chinese food and a night at home. Not once was I bored watching this, and Kirstie's powerful performance washes away any weak characters.
