Fantastic!
Amazing worth wacthing. So good. Biased but well made with many good points.
Close shines in drama with strong language, adult themes.
Much like creating a successful stew out of miscellaneous ingredients lying around the home, this modern film noir takes mostly much-used characters (alcoholic ex-cop, cold-blooded assassins, etc., etc.) from past films, stirs them into a pot, and comes up with an excellent dish, although it lacks fundamental originality. Still, speaking as a better-than-mediocre cook, I was quite impressed with the taste, and much enjoyed the meal. I really don't want to give anything away, because it's got some interesting flavors. Therefore, all I'm going to say is that this is a fine addition to the film noir genre, and if that's one of the things you're into, this will probably be satisfying treat, even if it misses scoring any Michelin stars. Bon appetit.
I had no expectations going in, but was pleasantly surprised. The cast really pulled this together and did a fine job. I didn't feel like the blood and gore was over the top and it had a humorous touch to it. Not typical at all. Well done.
6/4/18. Another cliched movie about a cop trying to turn things around in his private and professional life. If you like Hawkes, then catch it, but it's not like you haven't seen this story before.
I'll admit, John Hawkes character was somewhat entertaining, however, his overnight transition from a self described falling down drunk to a the individual that was going to put a violent misdeed right was simply not believable. The story line is not original and generally predictable throughout. John Hawkes is an alcoholic ex cop who finds a young woman who has been brutalized and left for dead and decides to immerse himself in solving the crime..... sound familiar? The "down-on-your-luck" character presented as a potential savior is a cheap hook to draw people in and admittedly, this theme and the implausibly high ratings from others convinced me to give it a try. What spoiled it for me in the end was a plot that lacked authenticity and simply became less plausible as the story progressed. There's plenty of violent action and as stated previously, most people enjoy seeing characters rise up to confront evil which may be enough for some, however, this story just didn't have enough substance to be very satisfying.I also have to wonder at the ratings for this movie. If you are rating a movie a "10" or even a "9," to me you're saying that was one of the best movies you've ever seen... probably should be nominated for an Oscar or Golden Globe. This phenomenon occurs much too frequently on IMDb. This film is not Oscar caliber - it's mediocre at best.
