It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.

True to its essence, the characters remain on the same line and manage to entertain the viewer, each highlighting their own distinctive qualities or touches.

The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.

The one good thing about this movie is that is was consistent from start to finish. The problem, of course, is that it was consistently flat the whole way through. It's just a few characters doing stuff without any conversations or other clues as to why they are behaving like they are. I could have easily turned it off at any point and not cared about how it ended. As it was, I fast forwarded through 20 to 30 minutes in the middle to get to the end. Not sure what the director was going for here. Not funny, not dramatic; just blah.

I love Debra Winger and lament the fact of her too few performances over the past few years. She was the reason I watched this dreck of a movie. It makes no sense whatsoever. Why didn't they admit to each other their dalliances? What was all the secrecy for? And the ending...all I can say is, as predictable as it was given the foregoing plot, oi vey is mere. The direction was watching ketchup flow, the writing was absurd bearing no relation to actual human behavior in the circumstance of boredom in marriage.

the story was good.although it was cliché but it was good. but it didn't been directed to be shown as real. why did Robert follow the couples to market and threatened Michael?first it was surprise to see Robert behave like fist time young lovers and second it seems the director was hopeless and desperate and wanted to go straight to the end. and why did took Debra Winger(Mary)that long time to get back to home and why their son (who was so worried about his mom and wanted to beat the s@#5it out of his father) did nothing to reach his mother and waited in the house and didn't conflict with his father who were sitting on the couch; it didn't make any sense. and the singing in the middle of disaster and family crisis, who dose that? it was my time to go bed but after seeing this ending i felt sorry for my self watching this movie. and i was very disappointed how the movie ended. and i don't mean that i love happy endings but after 3/4 of the film, it went wrong way.its like the director had cheated me as audience.(sorry for my poor English).

This film tells the story of a married couple, who stopped loving each other. They respectively have affairs, and both plan to leave their spouse. They go through much soul searching when their son comes back home for a few days."The Lovers" is a story that people can relate to. What is particularly interesting is that they both have affairs, and both are pressurised by their lovers to leave their family. Their struggles are well portrayed, and it is not easy to make their decisions because deep down there is still a spark lurking somewhere. I liked watching "The Lovers", and the ending is particularly satisfying.
