Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.

This is a dark and sometimes deeply uncomfortable drama

There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes

This is a straightforward romcom based on the initial premise that Anderson (Jason Biggs) jokingly asks waitress and complete stranger Katie (Isla Fisher) to marry him, she accepts, and they find themselves forging ahead in a relationship which neither of them really meant to enter into.Comedy is an odd business. It is often based around people behaving in ways in which they simply would not behave in real life. For instance, while Anderson might come out with a jokey proposal and Katie might accept, the acceptance would be equally jokey and the matter would go no further. She certainly wouldn't ditch her job and move in with him later that day. Films require suspension of disbelief to a greater or larger extent, and if you can't accept that initial unlikely action, then the film isn't going to work for you. I often have problems with this. But the problems I have are usually character-based rather than events-based and, here, the characters are fine. Biggs is his usual amiable twit, and Fisher is engaging (in more ways than one, apparently). In fact, Fisher shows here a flair for physical comedy (and particularly facial comedy acting) which she has shown in other films, and which is a great strength of hers. I liked the characters, so I was happy to follow the trail of improbabilities.Because what happens after the initial set up is every bit as daft and unlikely as that set up. It is populated with daft and unlikely characters, but they are all likable. And, importantly, the script, and most of the situations, are funny. There is some deft and amusing dialogue, and some laugh out loud moments (several involving Edward Herrmann and Margo Martindale) as Anderson's parents.I sat in my living room at 2am, watching this on my own, staying up for the last half hour, knowing I had to get up for work in the morning, because it kept making me laugh. Make no mistake - it is ridiculous. But it is also funny.

Jason Biggs definitely runs hot and cold in movie performances, and this one is freezing. Isla Fisher tries her best to lower the standard even further, but in truth neither of them has to work hard to drag this pile of dog poo into the gutter. It's lazy, contrived and immature in the extreme. I dread to think how a bunch of adolescent morons managed to get this script accepted - presumably by another bunch of adolescent morons who stumbled across a pile of money and a drunk movie studio boss.Tasteless and lame don't even begin to describe the level of humour. This is dumbed-down film making which makes me despair for the future, not just of the film industry, but for the human race.

Anderson (Jason Biggs) was in love with his former girlfriend and planned an elaborate proposal. He dressed up as Cupid, complete with glittering red briefs, wings, and a nice ring, and met his lady at a local restaurant. Alas, the woman keeled over and died from the excitement, most likely a victim of a bad ticker. Its been a year since and Anderson is still in dire straits. He can't work and he can't talk about anything but the near-fiancé he lost. One day, a close friend takes him to lunch at a diner and makes an impassioned plea for Anderson to get on with his life. Almost before the words are out of the pal's mouth, Anderson turns to the pretty waitress, Katie (Isla Fisher), who he just met, and asks HER to marry him. What a shock when she says yes! You see, she, too, has been under pressure of late. Katie still lives with her parents and she has an orthodontist boyfriend that the older couple adores. Dr. Tooth asked Katie to marry him, also, the night before but, although she likes him, she doesn't love him and doesn't want to be forced into acceptance. So, here is an escape for her as well. Before long, Katie is moving in with Anderson and planning the wedding. But, a wild cast of characters, including Anderson's parents, Katie's jailed biological father, the restaurant owners and various others complicate the intending nuptials. Will the just-introduced couple actually get married? This film tries to be a movie of quirky humor and offbeat situations but doesn't really succeed at making a favorable impression. No, its not the cast, for Fisher and Biggs are engaging performers and the supporting actors are nice, too. In fact, they are the reason to sit through this to the end, for the story itself falls flat on its face. Costumes, settings and camera work are adequate but not great and the direction is all over the place. So, this viewer really can't recommended it with any gusto whatsoever. If you, however, like any of the cast members, watch it and perhaps you will arrive at a different conclusion.

Michael Ian Black write and directs this forgettable piece of romantic comedy, with an emphasis on the comedy leaving the romance to simmer in the background, which I liked if only because I can't stand most Romcoms. In fact if this film wasn't on netflix via xbox 360, I sincerely doubt that I would've given it a chance. As it was and since my girl wanted to see it I decided to appease her movie (in)sensibilities.Jason Biggs (American Pie) is Anderson a man who's just given up on love. His soul-mate has just died via heart attack due to his tomfoolery involving dressing up as Cupid and proposing to her. Needless to say he's down in the dumps when he half-heartedly and jokingly asks a waitress to marry him out of the blue. Unfortunately, for him (and the viewer), the waitress Katie (Isla Fisher, who acts just as nuts here as she did in The Wedding Crashers) says yes. They then have to contend with their respective parents (including Joe Pantoliano in the thankless supremely unfunny role of jailbird dad) But my girl like it (even though I don't really like her taste in film) so it couldn't be all bad *shrugs* My Grade: C-
