College (2008): Dir: Deb Hagen / Cast: Drake Bell, Andrew Caldwell, Kevin Covais, Haley Bennett, Ryan Pinkston: Vulgar teen comedy about experience. Three high school seniors decide to check out the college scene in preparation for the following year. Instead of an exciting time they become the brunt of many cruel jokes launched by a senior frat house. Director Deb Hagan is not given a screenplay of any worth. Perhaps a viewing of National Lampoon's Animal House might have better inspired her. Drake Bell suffered a breakup and decides to add more excitement to his life. If that is truly the case then he would have starred in a different film than this. Perhaps this film is part of the countless cruel jokes he had to endure. Andrew Caldwell plays a loud and obnoxious friend and that is his basic function from start to finish. Kevin Covais is steered by his parents but it is clear that he will be coaxed into rebelling, which leads to a job interview gone wrong, and a session involving puke and a toilet. Haley Bennett plays the standard romantic interest who does little more than look stunning and somehow end up with the hero whom in reality she wouldn't be caught in public with. Ryan Pinkston makes this a career move towards more adult, but not more mature roles. None of them are any better off in the end. It aims low with drunkenness, vomiting and other lewd acts. Score: 3 / 10

College is a movie which takes pieces from other recent comedies. It is a mix between Superbad and American Pie: Beta House (one of the worst of the series but still slightly better than "College"). The cast of three friends is basically the same as Superbad's cast, but the difference is that the audience was more caring and Superbad's cast was more likable. Then the audience gets to suffer through an hour and a half of crude tasteless "humor", gross nudity and totally unrealistic situations. The film just didn't have the heart, emotion and depth as Superbad or American Pie. Anyone who has been on any college campus in the past 20 years can tell you that this is nothing like the college experience, this is a shameful attempt at humor. Indeed, "College" goes overboard on occasion, moving beyond the truth of the rest of the film and into a more outlandish zone, especially towards the end of the 3rd act when the friends get revenge on the college fraternity by pulling pranks on them. Overall this film was just a mess and rip-off. I wouldn't recommend it at all.

I read a lot of the comments on here before viewing. OK first off, it is certainly not worth paying money to see in theaters (but that is besides the point considering that it's not in theaters anymore). The acting wasn't bad, nor was the actual content in the movie, but it just felt like the poor man's Superbad...same premise, just done worse.Casting Drake Bell as the lead is a bad idea. I've watched a few eps of his TV show "Drake and Josh". I think it is a pretty decent TV show, just it has him in a dual-lead situation with Josh Peck, and Josh is the real reason the show is as good as some perceive it to be. Casting Drake without Josh is akin to casting David Spade without Chris Farley, to put it better. The other two main characters, the fat one and the nerdy one weren't terrible, but they weren't great either. What you usually find with these trio-lead movies like Superbad, or quad-lead like Road Trip, is good harmony between the characters that makes for some funny situations. There really wasn't much of that in College, especially with the fat one knocking on the nerdy one all the time. Remove that from a movie like this and you are spelling disaster. What made Superbad good was its slapstick comedy and some very good banter back and forth from the all the characters. There wasn't much of that in College, but the movie was comical to watch. OBVIOUSLY what occurs in this movie is not what goes on in college for the most part, but its fun to dream, i suppose.Contrary to what all the 1/10 comments would have you believe, you should be capable of sitting through this movie start to finish. There's a lot of TNA in the movie (look it up if you don't know what it means), so some good eye candy. The only thing that this movie was lacking was some good dry, sarcastic humor that you would find in Superbad and the sort.

This movie was utterly ridiculous and without any redeeming qualities. I doubt there will another movie this bad in the next 5-10 years. The portrayed college experience was so far off base that I find it hard to believe anyone involved in this movie ever went to or visited a college in their lives. Worse yet, this movie is wrought with extensive homo-eroticism that was offensive to every person of every sexuality. The movie is listed as a comedy, but nothing about it was funny. Instead they used sad, old school, low ball, grotesque antics and poor acting to hold together a weak story line. I couldn't help but think of College as Superbad remade by mentally ill drug addicts in the basement of a half-way house. No, that was unfair. That version would have been much better. Avoid this movie at all cost.
