A joy from start to finish. Lake Bell wrote and directed "In a World..." and also plays the central character, a Hollywood voice coach competing to be the new voice of the trailer, you know the one who sells the movie to you while you're munching your popcorn and it's one of the funniest films I've seen in a very long time and like a lot of the best comedies the jokes are exclusively verbal.Bell's terrific and she draws terrific performances from the rest of her cast including Eva Longoria playing herself in a brilliant cameo, (Bell is teaching her to sound like a Cockney gangster's wife). In fact, this is the kind of small budget comedy that should have gone onto Oscar success and become a classic rather than simply a cult movie but cult or classic, this is one to savor; it's a real gem.

lake bell is one of the few underrated actresses out there who can do wonders if the script is solid but this time she he writes, directs & starts in this comedy about voice overs in movie trailers.bell's direction is great she keeps it cinematic but the topic she chooses is totally dingy the characters never really develop the chemistry here at all i kept my expectations high for some witty strong dialogs but none of that comes now if we just look at the story lake bell plays a role of carol a girl who wants to be in the voice dubbing business she loves doing voice-overs on film trailers but her father does not approve this a bit.the voice dubbing acts hardly appear for few moments but most of the film is about the dysfunctional family, friends & affairs etc the film went off topic & never made a return to the root subject. The entire cast gets wasted here but Michaela Watkins performance is worth checking out & what the hell were Eva Longoria & Geena Davis doing here making a special appearance as for Lake Bell she is as usual stunning but problem is she really cant give her best here as she does in her other movies.it feels like lake bell really took the burden of directing on herself & forgot to add much variety & fun in her own character as well as the script she created a room for other actors but left herself out.the genre don't seem like comedy at all its more like a drama or a Rom-com as each an every scene gives you that vibe. Overall In A World 2013 is a disappointment without a doubt Lake Bell is a fantastic artist but i really hope her next directorial effort brings the best if she ever picks up the camera again my rating is 3/10.

The pleasures afforded by IN A WORLD are basic, but they are not insignificant. They are those of a good idea skillfully realized, and of an unfamiliar world revealed through exceptionally smart storytelling. That world is the Hollywood voice-over industry, and the idea was to make a movie about it from the perspective of its more marginalized voices, the women's.The sonorous male tones of the preview announcer, the TV commercial, the political advertisement are easy to conjure in our memory. It is harder, although we feel that we have heard them, to remember the women selling the product or creating the dread that makes us buy tickets to a thriller. There is the woman's voice on the telephone telling us what buttons to press, or from the GPS directing us to turn right, but that is the most that comes readily to mind... Lake Bell is appealing in the lead role as Carol, an aspiring voice-over artist, and as writer/director she's come up with a unique variation on a familiar indie formula: 30-something slacker gets kicked out of the nest. There's a lot going on—Michaela Watkins and Rob Corddry as Carol's sister and brother-in-law get a whole little romcom to themselves—but Carol's various struggles, professional, romantic and familial, mesh together very well. The cast is impressive: nice to imagine that somebody would cast Eva Longoria as a Cockney gangster's moll (though not in this movie, I'm glad to say), and Geena Davis turns up briefly as a studio exec who delivers a crucial message, maybe THE crucial message. Fuzzy, flabby Fred Melamed ("A Serious Man") is definitely the go-to guy when you need an overbearing a••hole, though Ken Marino seemed a little too cartoony as Carol's voice-over rival—more like an escapee from a Christopher Guest movie. Wouldn't have minded seeing more more about the worrrrld of Hollywood voice artists and dialect coaches; it's refreshing to watch a film where the characters do something real and don't just have vague glamour jobs as lawyers or architects (mainstream) or toil away as peons on a cube farm (indie). Available on streaming Netflix.
