When he is suspended from his university job for his outlandish ideas, Professor John Venkenheim leads a documentary film crew to the rim of the Arctic Circle in a desperate effort to vindicate his academic reputation. His theory: Mary Shelley's ghastly story, "Frankenstein," is, in fact, a work of non-fiction disguised as fantasy. In the vast, frozen wilderness, Venkenheim and his team search for the legendary monster, a creature mired in mystery and drenched in blood. What they find is an unspeakable truth more terrifying than any fiction...a nightmare from which there is no waking.

I laughed when 'Frankenstein's monster' finally made its appearance. I also vomited several times due to the shaky camera, which is conveniently pointing away from the monster most of the time, I guess because they didn't want to show the lame monster before the very end. I can't believe they decided to show it, considering it was so unimpressive and silly. The film fails to generate real tension, it suffers from the common problem with found footage, which is characters that bicker constantly, and it also fails to generate likable characters. We don't like any of them, and we don't even hate any of them. When they start to drop like flies, it makes no difference to us. Of course, Found footage does function largely as a kind of simulation of events, which means that you are not meant to care about protagonists, and instead enjoy the ride, being 'one of the crew'. Still, the film should not leave you totally indifferent, and this film never made me care. Also, as a simulation it is quite unimpressive. Many opportunities to make it really scary and suspenseful were lost, and there is too much padding. Two lousy stars.

First of all, let me say straight away that I was compelled to write this review after reading a few long 10 star reviews for this movie. Sorry, but I can't explain the existence of these reviews in any way other than the filmmakers' friends and other interested parties singing praise without any substance. I was not profoundly disgusted by this movie, but there is simply no way on earth that anyone would objectively give it 10 stars. Praising this plot because it apparently connects to where the novel leaves it? Are you even serious? The good sides of this movie is the actors being reasonably professional (not to be confused with a very limited effort at character development), the video quality and the scenery. "B" for the effort to go all the way to some cabin in the coldness. You can see that the filmmakers had the money to spend on stuff such as good clothes, renting the snowmobiles, and as I said, the camera-work was professional (no shaky "hidden footage" bs). On the other hand, there are absolutely no special effects. The entire volume of "blood" in the movie probably was recreated with one tiny package of sriracha sauce with a highly questionable result. I sighed when they find "blood traces" that looked like someone had a paper cut. There was so much to do potentially in terms of the plot. Just a few ideas that crossed my mind while watching: 1) discover that it was actually a real bear, while building the tension around the guy's obsession with the Frankenstein theory; 2) discover that it is a Frankenstein monster with an objective, say, to pull body parts from the victims in order to "replenish" his constitution; 3) have the monster actually respond in some fashion to the guy's efforts to connect to him. But hey, let's just leave it with a big guy who apparently feels the need to dress like a human, but will avoid the humanity at any cost and kill any person who encounters him. And btw, would also have a completely irrational idea to first mess up with the people in the cabin by stealing their snowmobiles. What. Why. I didn't give this movie one star because the scenery was nice, the actors gave it a good try, so it's not "awful" per se, but two stars fit it nicely. Also, what the hell? I watched it because it was recommended as similar to the "Dyatlov Pass Incident". DPI is quite an interesting movie, but I found no similarities. Again, gotta be the filmmakers' friends desperately trying to spread the word to get people to watch this rather sad effort. What lesson do we learn? I don't regret the time I spent watching, but I regret the money filmmakers wasted on this without having a good story to tell, when the money could be spent on so many useful causes.

worse than lair witch project! THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT was done by high schoolers.. and the stupid movie was written by a dreamer! its good to 'dream' about stuff, but if u're putting it on the big screen, please put it in prospective. coz you've just wasted ur money on the cheap script, crap actors and really wasted a trip to the arctic. Frankenstein, being a fictional character that has been fascinating to the audiences for over the century, i really think he deserves more credits that you have given him. luckily, i found this in my local library... i don't think this movie even made it to the big screen in NZ. really not worth paying for it. I wonder how much were made at the box office?

The found footage horror genre continues to grow more and more titles, few of which stand out on their own merits or regenerate the fear and intensity of the first entries such as 'The Blair Witch'. Recent examples of more potent, original films in the same vein include the 'REC' series, 'The Bay', 'The Tunnel', 'Bigfoot the Lost Coast', etc. While 'The Frankenstein Theory' never rises to or exceeds the horror coolness factor of the aforementioned titles, it does intrigue and make one think with its 'theory', and succeeds in that for a few moments it makes one wonder "what if?"The small cast and their performances, for the most part, do not stand out but neither do their bleats of terror nor obnoxious stereotypes ever annoy as much as in some similar films. Standouts among them are Timothy V. Murphy who is imposing as always as the expedition's wilderness guide, and Heather Stephens who is quite easy on the eyes. In addition there's a brief performance by Leland White as a paranoid meth peddler, which I thought was quite convincing and hilarious. As mentioned the premise is rather imaginative despite its presentation in found footage formula. Frankenstein is real expedition leader (Kris Lemche) tells us. A savage yet intelligent creature created by his ancestor, which he believes to be still running amok in the Canadian wilderness. Thus the purpose of the plot's expedition is to prove the monster's existence.Based on what the expedition leader already suspects, a well armed team of private soldiers was called for to deal with the creature, but of course logic never prevails in these kinds of tales. Once the expedition gets rolling, the film treats the viewer to some beautiful far northern scenery, mediocre acting, dialog and writing, and a precious few jump scares. The only character I really cared about was Karl. When his time was up, the order which the others' tickets were punched really didn't matter. All in all, 'The Frankenstein Theory' is a decent waste of an hour and a half. One could easily do worse in seeking a movie to watch. The problem then really becomes that one could do much better. Had the ending not been plainly given away by a character three quarters of the way in, I perhaps could have rated the film higher. This film isn't horrible, nor is it incapable or sub-par or spectacular in any form.
