** Spoiler Alert **I watched the movie and I'm still wondering what the flick's message was.I liked the city scenes, and I'll watch anything with Stiller in it, so it wasn't a total loss. But..There is so much they could have done with the concept of 40-somethings realizing that their youth is behind them! They could have made it funnier, and they could also have made it more poignant. Getting old is scary as hell. People treat you differently, especially at work, and you have all kinds of new body manifestations (skin tags, grey hair, age spots, etc.). All you have ever known is being young, and then one day it begins to dawn on you that you are "old", and you will never be young again! The ayahuasca scene could have been fun... just think of the hallucinations they could have had, the fun they could have poked at the Shaman, the crazy profound realizations they could have had (a vision quest... a totem animal...). Instead, the director chose to turn it into a puke fest. If they had to play up the vomit, they should have done this scene outdoors and had people go behind the bushes.Stiller's unfinished documentary seemed like an afterthought; it had no real place in the film – at least, not the way it was presented. Also, Stiller is supposed to be the protagonist, but I wasn't liking him so much when he went off on his father-in-law, who did nothing but try to help him by sitting thru 6 hours of a boring documentary and then giving very constructive advice. Stiller's character was never funny, only flawed. You're expecting a satisfying or climactic ending, or the issue of the deceit to be resolved. If you blink you'll miss it... the ethically challenged young film maker gets the fame he so desired – and Stiller's character, who evidently got nowhere with his own documentary, shrugs his shoulders and accepts what must be the moral of the story, which is... Young people who claw and lie their way to the top are just doing business as usual, and folks past their prime should sit back, accept their fate, and not concern themselves with things like integrity, honesty, and the pursuit of success. And the big 4-second payoff? The "old" couple is going to adopt a child! As if that matters. In fact, nothing in this film matters, as it doesn't appear to have a point. It's like a collage of random bits and pieces that someone Mod-podged together and decided to call a movie. There was nothing I could grab onto; nothing that drew me in.

Writer and director Noah Baumbach deals with what is liked to be middle aged in a youth obsessed society that is always looking for the next big young hotshot.Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts are Josh and Cornelia in this black tinged comedy. They are fortysomethings in New York. Their friends have kids, they have remained child free but age is catching up with them.Josh is a documentary film maker who made a successful film early in his career but is stuck in a project that is unwieldy and he is never likely to finish. Cornelia's father is a legendary film producer (Charles Grodin) who gives advice to to Josh about his documentary but Josh is unwilling to take it.A young couple Jamie (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried) endear themselves to Josh and Cornelia who find themselves rejuvenated with the company of younger people and try crazy and hip things.Jamie has aspirations to be a documentary film-maker as well, Josh mentors him but soon discovers that Jamie has a cavalier approach to ethical film making and that their mutual friendship was more than just accidental and that Josh and Cornelia have been used for their connections. The film is sporadically amusing but is never involving, the four leads give good performances, Driver and Seyfried are charming and yet behind the facade also manipulative and self serving. It is great to see Grodin having a meaty cameo who in the end is just as deceptive and shallow as Jamie when it comes to documentary ethics.

Josh (Ben Stiller) and Cornelia (Naomi Watts) are a childless couple in their forties who've reached that pivotal - and somewhat startling - moment in their lives when they suddenly realize that they aren't going to be young forever. In an effort to forestall the inevitable, Josh and Cornelia hook up with a hipster couple (Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried) in their twenties. Their commonality rests in the fact that Jamie (Driver) is a fledgling documentary filmmaker who greatly admires Josh's work .in the same field, even though Josh finds himself struggling to put his latest work together as he moseys his way into middle age. Yet, Jamie turns out to be a "spoiled brat" opportunist whose attitude and lifestyle are far less free-spirited and nonconformist than he leads Josh and Cornelia - and the world at large, in fact - to believe. "While We're Young" is a midlife-crisis comedy done in the oblique and sophisticated Noah Baumbach manner. The writer/director has some sharp and perceptive things to say about aging in a world that values youth above all else. The screenplay's targets (i.e., new age mysticism) are a tad too obvious and easy at times, but when he's not reaching for low-hanging fruit, Baumbach is right on the money in his humor- filled observations, as Josh and Cronelia grapple with the transitions and stages we all must go through - whether we want to or not - on this journey we call life. The moral of the story is that each age in life comes equipped with its own unique challenges and blessings, and that we should be willing to savor them without over-thinking ourselves into a state of terrified paralysis at the thought of growing old. It's nice to be reminded of that truth every now and again.

'While We're Young' struck a chord with me. It's not the main characters that I could relate the most to but the supporting characters. Whichever character an audience member can identify with is because of While We're Young's tremendous script and directing talent. The person responsible for this highly detailed film about what it means to be human and alive is Noah Baumbach. Prepare yourself for some of the greatest ninety seven minutes put to film.'While We're Young' does not have a solid plot. But is centered around the relationships of characters and the interactions they have socially and on different forms of media. It is an extremely thought provoking film that is sure to open up much debate months after its release in cinemas. It is not a slow paced film and has much to say about the state of friendships, relationships and how the internet plays a big part in our everyday lives. Sometimes with us left unawares. The couple that we are first introduced to is Josh (a striking Ben Stiller) and Cornelia (an energetic Naomi Watts). They are nearing their fifties and cannot escape the feeling that there are events that they are missing out on. But as age takes its toll they feel they have missed out on their opportunity and are far too old to engage in activities that are adventurous, daring and fun. Josh is a university professor and in one of his classes Jamie (a wacky Adam Driver) and Darby (a hypnotising Amanda Seyfried) spontaneously appear. Josh and Cornelia feel energised by the twenty something couple. A fact that their friends take pleasure in mocking them about. "Nine years ago they couldn't vote".'While We're Young' is so engaging that you always feel the runtime could have been stretched to over two hours. But no matter. What Baumbach offers us here is more than enough to be overwhelmed by. I was frequently touched by the heart and soul of the film. This is achieved through exceedingly excellent performances, character development and great lines every other second. Baumbach is turning into the next Woody Allen. I could not be any happier. This brings me to the astonishing script. Normally it takes two or three people to bring a well realised script to the screen. This is not the case in 'While We're Young'. The Director is the only contributor to this Meta feat of a film. All of the characters feel like real people, to gain their entire back story would take three films or more to achieve. Josh and Cornelia are the polar opposite of Jamie and Darby who do any activity for the sheer fun of it. The script delicately shows the contrasts and comparisons to be had between each couple. I'm so grateful that the characters never felt fake. This is the type of drama and comedy that I cannot get enough of. This is destined to be the funniest film of the year by a long shot. Directors twice the age of Noah Baumbach could not dream up the glorious lines that he does here. This is a Director that is in touch with society and knows what is right and wrong with it.The cinematography simply put is splendid. Sam Levy has worked previously with Noah Baumbach on 'Frances Ha'. Levy outdoes himself here, lending 'While We're Young' a whimsical feel hitting the right tone for the themes of the film. It is simple whilst effective. The composure of the shots is breath-taking. You just have to see this film if you consider yourself a supporter of art as well as entertainment for cinema. The music composed by James Murphy is beautiful and contributes largely to the effect that 'While We're Young' is bound to have on its audience. The best thing though is the inclusion of eighties hits such as All Night Long and Eye of the Tiger. This allows for further connection between Josh and Jamie through the power of music. As Josh says "I remember when this song was just considered bad". This will bring nostalgia to many older audience members and I for one am glad of this inclusion.'While We're Young' is the perfect example of when a Director is working in complete harmony with his out of this world cast; featuring well realised characters, an engaging story, a smart, punchy script, amazing cinematography and nostalgic tracks from the eighties. 'While We're Young' is a must see experience for viewers both young and old.
