Too many fans seem to be blown away
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
The first must-see film of the year.
It is encouraging that the film ends so strongly.Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a particularly memorable film
Rapture happens and leaves the two most annoying people on the planet behind and they wander around for the rest of the movie wondering why they were left behind. End of story. The only thing the movie has got going for itself is the location (Iceland).
Don't read if you don't want to know the ending. But don't worry, it's just as boring as the rest. Nothing really happens. Other than a couple finding out that they are the last people on earth. Seems like that revelation should pick up the pace. Nope. They fight over yogurt. Go sight seeing. Take pictures. Ride around on a cart in the grocery store. Try on clothes. Make lattes. The description of this movie made it sound like it had action - don't be fooled. They weren't fighting for survival, there was no one and nothing to fight against. Aside from boredom that is. There was no real danger, other than falling out of a shopping cart and sustaining a flesh wound because you are a giant man child. There was the notion that things could get bad, but that wasn't fleshed out, and neither were the characters. I really wasn't overly invested in them, which turns out to be a good thing because I was more annoyed than sad when the girl killed herself. Off screen, with no build up. The man then proceeds to fall all over her in the mud trying to carry her, and then after all that just leaves her behind and drives off. I hear you buddy, I don't really care about her either. Really you just bored her to death. But alas he doesn't have the nerve to off himself, though he makes two pathetic attempts. In the end he is (maybe) the last person on earth. We will never know. They found one man alive, who then died that night. So there may be more people, but why clue us in? Why bother to give this mess a plot? We also will never know what happened to all of the people on earth. And why the animals are still there. And why everything else is normal. If it was the rapture I highly doubt they would be the only ones left behind. But I guess I will just have to not wonder for the rest of my life, because this review is the extent of my caring. In the hopes of saving someone else from wasting their time as I did. It wasn't really even that artfully done, so there wasn't anything I even enjoyed to make up for all the rest. No, wait, I'll end on a good note, unlike this movie. The scenery was pretty. I think I would like to visit Iceland.
Do not expect a happy or an ending "with a point" with this movie but an ending that makes you think about the dynamics of the world we live in. This film sharply protrudes a metaphor of living in a world without others. While it does not explicitly state a message that you must have others to enjoy a world of natural beauty, it makes you reflect upon whether you can or cannot live without other people. We spend our lives now in social media taking for granted that we are enjoying our lives, but are we only doing so because of these internets? Can we enjoy things as they are without having to share it with others? Can we stand being alone? Can we stand being only with one other person? In the end, we see the protagonist driving away heartbroken and confused, but it is an open-ended ending. When faced with a scenario where we have become virtually alone, it leaves us with a choice: do we commit suicide spiritually by saying "what's the point?" or do we make an effort to enjoy things as they are without anyone's approval or agreement? Incidentally, I was in Iceland last week and they have a saying "þetta reddast", which I leave you to google.
There is absolutely no plot in this movie! Being an Icelander I can't understand why they were always looking for water? It's like two people searching for sand in the Sahara desert.I get it would be emotionally hard to be the only two people left on this island. And it's cool to explore that but you gotta give me more then just two people talking about water and being depressed. They should have moved to a farm next to a lake, not some mediocre house in the city. And the end was so strange always cutting to this water machine thing scene at the house and it didn't lead to anywhere. And HOW was this icelandic fisherman so thirsty? like I said there's water everywhere. He should know that. And why didn't they just sail home since she was so homesick? I wish they would have brought some plot twist. I really like the concept.
