A different way of telling a story
Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.
This is a gorgeous movie made by a gorgeous spirit.
I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
This is a predictably sweet comedy, with a mildly nasty turn. Moore is great as usual, as spinster teacher Linda Sinclair. She lives in her world and finds reality distasteful.Linda goes on blind dates, but the men are not up to her standards. Until one day former student Jason comes back in town from New York. Jason is a gifted writer, but he's planning to give up writing to become a lawyer.Jason's father is blamed for his change of heart and surely Linda does blame him. Things take a different turn when Linda insists to have Jason's first play performed in her school.Complications ensue, but a happy ending is on sight. If anything, this should "teach" anybody never to believe somebody's version of facts, until you get further proof.
This is a pleasant, low budget, entertaining film. The story is built around a high school production of a play written by a former student of the school. But there are complications galore. It's funny. It's clever. It's original. There are a lot of laughs but also some serious moments, a bit of rumpy-pumpy and a few profanities, tied to-gether with a humorous, British accented voice over commentary and occasional, bluntly worded on screen titles. It's a happy combination of good writing, interesting characters, original ideas and snappy production, all done on a low budget.
This is meant to be a comedy but very little I can find funny in it.How on earth can film makers(Hollywood) make a joke about a school teacher having sex on school premises with her former student?!In today's climate that is just not on. The story is about a failed albeit young writer getting his play performed at his old school. The play looks awful as is this movie.Poor acting and ham acting throughout the picture; a poor script, no sympathetic characters etc etc.Generous that I give it: 3/10
This film tells the story of an unmarried female teacher who is in trouble after an alumnus playwright goes back to her school for a school play.Julienne Moore often plays challenging characters, and this English teacher is no different. She faces loneliness, shame and embarrassment; yet deep down she is a good person who does teenagers much good. I sympathize with her experience, and I thought she did not deserve such bullying. I liked the ending a lot, although I thought the film could have done without the narration of the voice that tells her what to do and what not to do.The story is told in a comedic manner, hence I enjoyed watching it.
