brilliant actors, brilliant editing
At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
Watching this film at 2AM and ended up still energetic and awake at 4AM. The duration of the film is 2hr 1minute. Not a single is boring. Trust me, this is a biopic of an Indian female boxer. The director fully utilize the actor in Priyanka Chopra. PC gaves her career best performance till date. This movie has a heart pounding climax. The film is an astonishing spectacular.
The film opens with Mangte Chungeijang Kom (Priyanka Chopra) in labour, walking towards the hospital with her husband, Onler Kom (Darshan Kumaar). Due to a curfew, they have difficulty finding a public transport and Onler is mistaken for an insurgent and beaten when he tries to find a vehicle. The film then shifts to a flashback in which Kom found boxing gloves in the remains of an air crash in 1991, which prompted her interest in boxing despite her father's disapproval. During an early fight, she chases a boy and ends up in a boxing gym. After realising that the coach of the gym, Narjit Singh (Sunil Thapa), was also the coach of the Asian champion Dingko Singh, Kom tells him about her boxing aspirations.
A lost opportunity to create India's Million Dollar Baby. Mary Kom is supposedly a sports biopic on the life of ace boxer Mary Kom from Manipur (the only Indian female to be 5 times world champion). However, after one finishes watching the movie it turns out to be a conspiracy by Priyanka Chopra and Omung Kumar to leverage the name of an ace boxer to develop an action packed cinematic entertainment. The movie itself sets disclaimer that it is based on life events of Mary Kom not the life of Mary Kom. Priyanka Chopra tried hard to get into the boxing gloves but her glamour still resonates vividly in the movie (cosmetic usage, etc). The movie exemplifies dramatic experience by trying to mimic Rocky (hand movement gesture after winning matched), Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (training at Manali). On various occasions as she wins the titles, Priyanka jumps like an excited child, now whoever has watched Mary Kom boxing or any boxing match for that matter would know how strenuous it is after the match has ended and the boxer is hardly able to stand. Another big turnoff is poor product placements by Havmor, Tata Salt, Iodex, Sugar-free, etc. Havmor is an extreme blooper which shows an outlet in Manipur when it is hardly present outside Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. Mary Kom is also burdened by immaterial songs rendering the movie cinematic and uninspired.Only satisfaction from the movie would be if it inspires few females to take up professional sporting career. Mary Kom could have been made with an entire Manipuri cast or as documentary film.
I watched "Mary Kom" with my family. It's simply a foolish movie. I think, it to be a political brainwash film in the disguise of a "sports film". The name "INDIA" is unnecessarily used........probably just to capture the mainstream audience. Nothing realistic is there about Manipur's socio- political reality. Even the sets are unrealistic. The world championship held in china is full of advertisement of "Usha" and "Polycrol. The character and whole thing is vaguely drawn. The last tension is childish.......any third-grade director wouldn't dare to do such melodramatic thing. "Chak de India" or even "Bhag Milkha Bhag" is much better. If you just need to see a nationalistic foolish fairy tale, watch it. But if you are a little bit conscious about intellect in films....don't dare to watch.
