The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.

As a teenager that has grown up not only in a Catholic family but also in a society that portrays the issue of homosexuality as controversial, I found this movie extremely eye opening and interesting. Within the first few minutes of the movie, there was a quote that really stuck out to me: "This country is doing everything it can to make it seem like it is okay to be gay, and it's not." When I heard this I was shocked. How could someone say something so harsh and horrible? Throughout the movie, there were several families with a homosexual son or daughter. Most of the parents mentioned that when their child came out, they referred to the Bible. Leviticus 20:13 states, "If a man also lie with man and a woman also lie with woman, both of them are committing an abomination. They shall be put to death, their blood is upon them." Despite the fact that I am apart of the Catholic community, I had never once before heard of this verse. I feel as though the church portrays homosexuality as a sin that should be punished with death. I find this ridiculous. Overall, I thought this movie was intriguing and gave a new perspective on homosexuality (interviews of Christian parents of homosexuals) that I had never seen before.

As a piece of filmmaking, there were moments where this movie felt a bit heavy-handed to me, but I had to remind myself that I'm not its target audience, and that's a good thing. I'm gay, been out since my teens, and I don't have people in my life that have a problem with that. For me, the topic doesn't entertain discussion anymore, because it's a topic without two sides to the it. On one side is simple basic factual information that those of us who are gay and know gay people know are true, and on the other side is ignorance and fear and misinformation. I've had the debates over whether it's a choice, the legal implications of marriage equality, etc., so many times that they're settled in my head, there's not much else to say, and I kind of roll my eyes at the ignorant platitudes that get regurgitated. At some point, I also start to become irritated with the idea that gay people have to be constantly educating straight people, and I know that that's counterproductive, because it is so often simple ignorance. As the film points out, people's opinions change very quickly once they know a gay person and their misconceptions are corrected. Sometimes, though, I still feel like, why is it the job of every gay person to educate everybody, why can't they educate themselves?Well, if you're short on patience this film could be an excellent tool. The things I feel are heavy-handed, because they're debates that I've had so many times that I just feel like my head might explode if I have to have them again, some people really haven't heard those things, and this film gives very good, clear concise explanations about them. Whether it's a choice, what does the Bible really say about it, etc., are all spelled out here in a very accessible way, if people need the information and are willing to learn.Beyond being educational, the reason I gave them film nine stars is that the personal stories it tells are done very well and are very moving. The film focuses on the stories of around five different families from different Christian denominations who had gay children, and lets those stories unfold as the film progresses. If you can watch those stories- one about a mother whose child killed herself because her sexuality wasn't accepted, and how that mother has since become an activist after learning in the most horrible, irreversible way the consequences of bigotry- and not be somewhat moved, and not empathize with the people in the stories, then you really need to examine what could be wrong with you that you're lacking that basic human empathy, rather than what's wrong with gay people.

I watched this on Netflix and the information on there says "This Documentary examines the ways in which conservative Christian groups have used - and sometimes exploited - scripture to deny human rights".Yet 95%-98% of the movie is strictly about Homosexuals? Really I kept waiting for them to start talking about something else, one of the many other things the Church pushes against such as abortion, etc.Shouldn't the description be more obvious in that it's not about all human rights, but just homosexuality? So if your hoping to see/hear more than just about one subject, your sadly out of luck.

To twist God's words and say that there is no word for HOMOSEXUAL in Greek Hebrew or Aramaic is justifying the sinful act of homosexuality. God makes it very clear that a man with a man or a woman with a woman is a detestable sin. The NEW LIVING TRANSLATION uses modern words such as homosexual.. look up the scripture Leviticus 18:22 in the New King James version: it clearly says that a "man shall not lay with a man , nor a woman with a woman, for this is an abomination".. Just because there is no ancient word for it, does not mean God approves of it... I resent the fact that because I am a Christian, I am labeled as a homophobic. You are trying to justify immoral behavior such as homosexuality or pornography.
