Most undeservingly overhyped movie of all time??
While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
I had heard about this for years but thought it was just a silly joke. Really--"Bambi Meets Godzilla"...come on! To my total surprise it played one night years later as part of an animation festival. I admit the credits were amusing and I broke out laughing at the end...but that was about it. The animation is terrible and, after seeing it once, it doesn't play well again at all. I think it gets all this attention just because of the title. So, worth catching once but it's just a one-joke film. That's all I have to really say but IMDb requires 10 lines of text for everything. That's kind of silly. I mean for feature films it makes sense but for a 2 minute short????? How much can you say? It's taking me more time to type this than it takes to watch this short. THERE! I completed over 10 lines:)
God Bless Mr. Sweeney wherever you are! My 4th Grade Teacher Mr. Sweeney told us the plot for "Bambi Meets Godzilla" and we HAD to see it!!! Eventually we raised money by showing afterschool movies and our box office attraction was "Bambi meets Godzilla!" It was a proud day for this elementary school in Huntington, Long Island near Greenlawn. The school is gone, but Bambi, Godzilla and colorful memories remain! The soundtrack starts off with Rosinni's "Willen Tell" Overture and concludes with the Beatles's "A Day in the Life" final note. We all know the tragic aftermath!!!I did see an unauthorized sequel at a student show at Florida State University Moore Auditorium. They presented "Bambi's Revenge" This sequel featured Bambi giving "Godzilla" a hot foot and we actually see the giant lizard's face. Eventually 'Zilla hops around on one foot when he accidentally stomps on Bambi for another time.
This is an amazing "movie". You will laugh the first time you see it, and then you'll laugh the second time, and the third time and so on. But I think it is very, very disturbing due to its completely bizarre nature, and the "surreal" feel this short has. In its simplicity and brevity, it conveys more feelings than most summer blockbusters, being funny and hauntingly bizarre at the same time. The scary thing is that the combination of the chord with the cartoony, strange, black and white death of poor little Bambi gives me a feeling much like the feeling I have in a nightmare, so it's a very personal thing, I don't believe anyone else would find this as disturbing and haunting as I do.10/10
The credit sequence (which is extensive) is hilarious. (I believe this movie influenced Monty Python's credit sequences.) It falls prey to the same sync problems which plague most Japanese imports. Although the plot is simple, it has become a classic because of its direct approach to universal themes and interpretations ranging from "good vs evil" to "little guy vs corporate greed." Marxist undertones are not hard to see here. The director's clear point of view and gracious acknowledgment of the many (usually anonymous) workers whose contributions blend seamlessly to make this classic make this one of the least didactic of the Godzilla canon.
