Mostly, the movie is committed to the value of a good time.

Story: It's very simple but honestly that is fine.

It hits the expected beats you would expect. Totally entertaining and the narrative arc between the leads is alright. Let down by under developed side characters, lazy storytelling , self seriousness ,and too many musical numbers !Hated the abrupt ending too.q

This film I watched after watching "Ae dil ha mushkil" being optimistic. This film was bad, to start with apart from the building of the college from outside, everything you could tell it's a film set, student reminiscing made me cringe, bad acting, bad clichéd unrealistic story, bad direction. I was bored from the beginning hoping it may get interesting but nope it got more awful and worse. I wish I haven't wasted my time on this film.

The first impression that you'll get about this film is that Karan Johar has tried a tad too hard to project Indian students and colleges as something they're truly not!Where in India do you find colleges like "St.T's" with devastatingly good looking blokes running after a girl who is above-average at best!Puh-leeeeeeeez, Shanaya (Alia Bhatt) is not some princess that she's made out to be in the movie, she sure is European looking but the last time I checked Indian beauties (Deepika, Bipasha, Priyanka, Lara) are far more exotic and gorgeous than some girl with 20% talent and 80% connections (father - Mahesh Bhatt). The real star(s) of this movie are the two male leads, they have far better chemistry than Shanaya/Rohan or Shanaya/Abhi. I see immense potential for both of the guys even though, Varun needs to brush up his acting skills and Sid needs to stop being a plank when he's dancing! Now coming to the reason why I rated this movie a friggin' 8, with all the bad and not very good things I've said about it so far; This movie is pure entertainment! - dancing, music, some daydreaming (who wouldn't have loved to be a student at a college like St. Teresa's back in the day!) lots of energy, some fun and frolic.I am not a critic and when I go to the cinema and buy a ticket I need to watch a flick which is my money's worth, mainstream Indian cinema is not really known for its class and masterpieces. Which is why I go for Iranian, French or Turkish movies when I need to watch something profound and meaningful and turn to Good Ol' Hindi Cinema when I need to kick back, enjoy some dance and music, you know just have a good time. And if a Hindi movie has all the ingredients of a masala entertainment, I am more than happy to rate it 8.P.S I am not saying Hindi cinema is all about pointless masala flicks, of course something worthwhile comes around once in a few years but I am happy that as an open-minded, diverse movie viewer I have movies from various film industries to cater to my moods.Watch SOTY when in the I-don't-care-what-the-story-is-I-want-to-kickback -and-chill mood.
