A powerful, intimate portrait of three women living in the same house during different eras who all face unplanned pregnancies. The vignettes follow a recently widowed nurse struggling to take control of her life in the early 50s, a mother of four balancing raising a family and maintaining a career in the 70s, and a student making a difficult decision with the help of one woman that will change the course of both their lives in the 90s.

It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

Honestly this movie was pretty crappy the way it's not in proper order as the second movie was!So in the first story, we see Demi Moore's character as a 1950's nurse and is wanting to terminate the baby because it seemed to be that she slept with her dead husbands brother. However I didn't realise that was the case at all as the storyline was going too quick for me. Then she gets a creepy sick doctor that didn't disinfect the equipment and just left her there losing a large amount of blood. The screen fades and raises like a million questions in your head. I was wondering the whole night did she die or did someone save her? This had given me a headache a and I felt really unsatisfied that it didn't show what happened.Anyways the second story wasn't as depressing but wasn't that great. The mother of 4 Barbara realises she's pregnant but doesn't want the baby since she has enough rascals in the house lol. I mean at the end when she decided to keep the baby, I thought to myself like shouldn't she talk more about this to her husband instead of arguing with him a lot. Like c'mon this story was meant to be set in the 70's not 50's so why was she hiding on wanting to get rid of the baby!To the third story, we see a young girl Christine finding out she's preggers by Craig T Nelsons sugar daddy character and disses him. Then she is arguing with Jada Pinketts character because she believes if Christine aborts the baby, she would go to hell. They go to the health clinic and are introduced by Cher's character who will be aborting Christines babies. Then this is where the storyline became stupid and awful. The young fella we had met earlier on became a psycho killing Cher's character, injuring another doctor and Christine. Then the scene fades, what kind of story was that??!! Why weren't even the police involved??The stories were rubbish, I don't know why this won 3 golden globes and the sequel only one?! This is one of the worst films I have ever seen in my life!

Review: I quite enjoyed this deep, emotional drama which is set from the 50's to the 90's about 3 different women, Demi Moore, Sissy Spacek and Anne Heche, who all have problems concerning abortion. The first story, which stars Demi Mooore, is the most emotional out of the 3 because it was illegal to have an abortion during the 50's. Demi Moore's performance was brilliant and extremely real. It's a shame that you don't see the outcome of the first story, but it a very well written storyline that will definitely touch the heart. The second story, which is based in the 70's is starring Sissy Spacek as a house wife and a mother of 4 who struggles to have any time for herself because of her hectic lifestyle. When she finds out that she is pregnant, she has to make the difficult decision if to keep or abort the baby. This is another powerful drama that was very well made. The acting by all of the cast was great, along with the storyline which was also, emotional. The third an final storyline which is set in the 90's is starring Anne Heche as teenager who gets pregnant by a married man. She also has to make the decision if to keep or abort the baby, but she gets help from her close friend Jada Pinkett Smith, and the nurses at the clinic. This was also an emotional piece, which stars Cher as a nurse. In all, the whole movie is a right eye opener that was a great watch. Emotional! Round-Up: This movie came out when Demi Moore and Cher were in the spotlight and extremely popular. As this movie was an HBO special, it didn't get a major release in the cinemas, but it was talked about at the time. Personally, I hadn't heard of the movie, but I'm glad that I added it to my rental list because it was a great watch. The fact that the whole film is based around the same house was cleverly done by the director and the delicate subject matter was dealt with in a sympathetic and thoughtful way. Although the movie came out in the 90's, it doesn't seem dated or out of touch with matters of this day and age which is why it's worth watching.I recommend this movie to people who are into there extremely emotional dramas about 3 stories based on abortion which takes place over the years in the same house. 7/10

First of all, I want to thank fayR for calling a spade a spade: I'm pro-abortion, period. I believe all three women should've aborted. I gave this film a nine because, as testified to at I'mNotSorry.net, I don't believe it's true that all women who find themselves pregnant and don't want to be agonize over it; and neither do I believe that having an abortion necessarily affects a woman negatively or for a long period of time. For that I'm grateful for the character in the middle segment who admits to having felt relieved after aborting. Hard for me to believe that relief isn't the Number One sensation felt by a woman after undergoing a safe, effective abortion. No, it will not haunt you for the rest of your days, and this needs to be said.I also thank Merwyn Grote, though we sit on opposing sides of this issue, for submitting the only review that actually looked beyond the surface to see the message. The message I got, however, differs from the one Grotes saw: What I saw was the horror of conservative backlash. The only character who had access to a safe, legal abortion without getting mobbed or firebombed was the 1970s one. Our society passed through a blip of progressiveness that lasted about a decade, and that's what I find the most disturbing thing this movie showed. Every viewer should agree with that.Veering a little off-topic here, but I never understood why back-alley abortionists couldn't take the extra minute to wash their hands and disinfect their instruments. It's not as if it added to their overhead. What motivated this pond scum? Money? OK. But he already got paid! What harm could it have done to swab some alcohol onto the speculum? Tom in the 1950s segment was the one who deserved to be shot. Where are all the indignant anti-abortion voices when it comes to him and his ilk -- and don't think they don't still exist. The state of Wyoming has not a single legal abortion provider. Who do you suppose is performing abortions in Wyoming?

This film shows up as well now as I did when I first saw it in 1996 and was amazed. All those in the "demi moore can't act" camp should check out what she can do with the right material. She delivers an amazing performance in the first piece, giving those of us who dont remember a glimpse of the pre-Roe v Wade situation for women who found themselves in a less than desirable situation. Sissy Spacek is brilliant as ever in a lighter, though heartfelt and often ignored situation of a mom deciding whether one more child is what she wants. The final segment knocks me off my feet. Kudos to Cher for pulling together great actors and great stories.
