I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.

Wasted talent and gags. Great for film class on how to squander talent. Should have been played really dry not like this.

The Comebacks (2007): Dir: Tom Brady / Cast: David Koechner, Carl Weathers, Matthew Lawrence, Brooke Nevin, Melora Hardin: When asked to make better films, this is not the ideal comeback sought after by film fans. Idea regards those whom are seen as not good enough but are destine for victory. Unfortunately this film isn't good enough and it isn't destine for anything other than a dusty shelf life. Director Tom Brady goes after sports films with funny opening background footage but from there it is all down hill. David Koechner plays this terrible coach who struggles in balancing work and family. Koechner is a funny guy but picked the wrong film to be presented as a lead. The ending is so predictable that it might have been funnier had the coach continued to fail. Carl Weathers narrates and appears later in the film to prove that his career has come down to this. Matthew Lawrence plays the son of a drag queen. That shouldn't bother him near as much as the story he is involved in. Brooke Nevin plays the coach's daughter and her bra resembles footballs therefore Lawrence will be able to fondle them (excuse me), fumble them. Melora Hardin is also featured as Koechner's wife and the role is about as broad as a deflated football. Making fun of sports films is a plus with reasonable production but when it is as boring as those films then a comeback is out of the question. Score: 5 / 10

Yes, everyone loves the Scary Movies and Hot Shots, but spoof films have really gotten out of hand. With disasters like Epic Movie, Date Movie, Superhero Movie, etc, is there really anything left to be spoofed? Sure, I'm a guy who likes stupid comedies with bathroom humor, crotch kicks and all that stuff, but those movies just abuse it. Enter The Comebacks, a stupid, yet entertaining, take on the inspirational sports flick.David Koechner (best known as Champ Kind from Anchorman) finally gets a well deserved lead role and makes the most of it. Sure, all he does is act like a complete moron, but that's what Koechner does best. He just simply looks like he's having fun being a complete moron. Carl Weathers, a veteran of the Rocky films, lends a small supporting hand. There are some funny cameos by folks such as Dennis Rodman and Frank Caliendo. Some of the films spoofed successfully include Friday Night Lights, Remember the Titans, Rudy, Rocky and Coach Carter. Some sad spoof attempts are made at films such as Radio and Stick It. On the other hand, those who watch ESPN will like seeing sports issues spoofed such as the Duke lacrosse scandal, and Terrell Owens. So, if you're the type of person who's willing to laugh at stupid things...enjoy! If not, just skip and save everyone the complaining.

As you know, movies such as Date Movie, Epic Movie, Meet The Spartans, etc. are coming out and doing well in the box office for like a week and then they fall off the grid. Why? Well the answer is simple...the movie is freaking retarded. I mean come on, a movie based on spoofs from another movie would sound like it might produce a few laughs, but I think many agree that we laughed at first and then never watched them again. They could just never click because the writers are probably some drunk college kids who said one night after taking a massive hit from their bong, "DUDE!! I GOT IT!! LETS, LIKE, MAKE A MOVIE...OFF ANOTHER MOVIE!!!" and then voilà, we have crap on the screen yet again. This movie is no different. Except for the fact that when I laughed, my laugher's were meaningful. I laughed for a least 30 seconds and not just a quick giggle. This movie did pretty well on its spoofs but at many times it was just so unrealistic that it really downed the potential this movie may have had. Some of the timing didn't match, and you know I could go on forever but I'll just stop and say if you really have nothing else better to do, then maybe just give this a watch and laugh a little and then move on with your life. A rental may suffice but don't buy it.
