SERIOUSLY. This is what the crap Hollywood still puts out?
Good concept, poorly executed.
Better Late Then Never
Best movie ever!
This film is a really good piece of entertainment for kids, with just enough high-concept sci-fi to keep the adults engaged as well. The overall theme of communication is well-embedded throughout the film, even down to the end credits, with a Roger Waters song that echoes some of his Pink Floyd classics. High marks for the two child actors, particularly Rhiannon Leigh Wryn as Emma Wilder, who with Chris O'Neil as her brother Noah, never seem to be acting, but come across as just two normal kids. The "government overstepping it's bounds" part of the plot seems a bit shoe-horned in, but it does give some minor characters a chance to get back into the story. All in all, a damn sight better than a lot of kids movies that slide into over-violent trash...
To me, this plays like the children's' version of What the Bleep Do We Know? Down the Rabbit Hole. This IS Down the Rabbit Hole in one aspect, and appears to bear ties to Through the Looking Glass, as well, but that is a large part of its charm. This is not so much Alice in Wonderland, but is more what would have happened had Wonderland come to Alice...had Alice been smart enough to have figured it out. I enjoyed this far more than expected, as there have been SO many kid's movies out lately with quantum themes, but this one had something lacking from most...and rather large amount of heart.I found this to be intelligent, touching, and inspirational. Regardless of age, this is an enjoyable film, with a great story at the center, some stunning (and realistic) effects, and a fantastic execution. This is wholly enjoyable and I love it.It rates an 8.9/10 from...the Fiend :.
if you have kids to take to the movies, I suppose this a good bet, but I wish Hollywood didn't feel such a need to dumb things down so much for them. As others have mentioned, there are tons of plot holes (like how they walked out of a secure facility without anyone noticing all the cameras swarming with bugs), but the charming and genuine young girl keeps bringing it back to center. The parents are kind of two-dimensional, and the ever-wooden Michael Clarke Duncan isn't even flat (I think he should just call himself Mike Duncan, and i wish people would stop casting him in the part of anything more than a throwaway 80-IQ extra, god is he made of lead). The most aggravating thing about this movie was the music, typical overblown inanity; if your movie needs that much fluffy nonsense to bring it home, then your movie sucks.
(I loved it, it was sweet, but this is a specific reply to some other comments)In fact this was an example of really good product placement in the sense that it actually carries an important plot element. It's *not* gratuitous. By showing that, at a nanotech-level, the innards of Mimzy were constructed by Intel (and then having a character who was *from* Intel saying "we're *eons* away from being able to do this) *tells* us, and the people in the story (not that many were really paying attention) that this is something sent from the future and *not* anything to do with aliens. And yet people still seem to think it's about aliens, ET and all that. Do pay attention. :-)In fact I was thinking, watching it, "Sufficiently Advanced Technology"...(Marked as a spoiler to be safe but really if you're paying attention to the prologue it's not, really.)
