In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.

it is the rare 'crazy' movie that actually has something to say.

The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one

One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.

I was one of those people who, though fairly young at the time (30) did not like "A Clockwork Orange". As a result, for years I dismissed anything with Malcolm McDowell. In recent years I began to rethink my avoidance of McDowell, particularly as he grew older...I like him more. Now, after finally watching this film, I'm really going to have to rethink McDowell. This is a great film, and McDowell's performance is superb. And I say that as one who believes that time-travel films rarely work.Strong point #1: The producers and director paid attention to detail, not simply advancing the plot. How would a time traveler act and think in a totally new environment? Well done.Strong point #2: The acting. As I indicated, Malcolm McDowell is excellent here; very believable. David Warner is very good as Jack the Ripper. This was only Mary Steenburgen's second film. At first she comes on as playing dumb, but as the plot moves forward she seems more believable.Strong point #3: There is sentimentality, not just brutality. There is love, not just murder. This is occasional humor amidst all the drama. There is wonder and amazement. This does not mean that all is well. I guess I can't blame the producers for the special effects...after all, it was only 1979. But they are a bit primitive compared to what we have today. And. once the film begins to build toward a climax, it seems as if things get a bit more mundane (I mean really...why would the cops believe someone who identified himself as both H.G. Wells and Sherlock Holmes?).But aside from that, there is little to criticize here, and it's nice to get a glimpse back of modern culture almost 40 years ago.I'm overall impressed and highly recommend the film...and I give it something rare for me -- an "8".

Time After Time was one of those films I saw in my youth (I was 13 in 1979) and it left an indelible impression on me. More of a romance than sci-fi, the viewers suspension of disbelief needs to be fluid here as we watch Meyer take liberties with history and turn our beloved writer into a time hopping romeo out to save the world from the evils of Jack the Ripper. However the deeper entertainments here are the chemistry between Steenburgen and McDowell, who were married after filming completed. So in a sense we are watching a romance in real life unfold similarly like in the film, and all the more better with a lush Rosza score behind it, which really is the best thing about the film. Why this movie is not on Blu-ray completely baffles me but it doesn't exactly stand out in terms of photography. The effects are simple and well placed, external shots are functional and appealing but not epic, but an HD remix is desperately needed here as the SD version is the only available through Amazon. Sometimes studios do this because HD can sometimes make the movie look worse, and if there is no budget to clean it up, keeping it in Low-Fi sometimes is best. However Time After Time deserves a view if you like on screen romance mixed with compelling situations reminiscent of the Hitchcock school of Love meets danger.

the time travel. and one of the darkest murderers.a hunt. an Malcolm Mc Dowell as the good guy. a film who has the gift to be more than a good adaptation of Welles ' novel because it is, in same measure, mixture of crime, idealism, definition of the XX century and force of the week character. the moral values, the contact with different society, the love problems and the status of hero for a common guy are pieces of a film who could be more than entertainment. because, more than acting, the questions about science and rules are really significant. the fresh air - that is the basic virtue of that lovely film who reminds more than presents.

Nicholas Meyer directed this imaginative if dated film that stars Malcolm MacDowell as H.G. Wells, who is an inventor of a real time machine that he shows off to friends in 1890's London. One of his friends, a surgeon named Dr. John Stevenson(played by David Warner) is really Jack The Ripper, whom the police have finally tracked down to his home, but John/Jack escapes in the time machine to the year 1979, in San Francisco California, where Wells follows him, but instead of his predicted utopia, is shocked to find it more to John/Jack's liking, though Wells is still determined to stop him, with the help of Ann Robbins(played by Mary Steenburgen) a woman he falls in love with... Entertaining and well acted, though marred by being overly preachy and obvious. Still, well worth a look.
