All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

Big Trouble is a underwhelming movie with a poorly developed plot and a terrific comedic cast that sadly could not save this. Tim Allen is in excellent form in the lead and his on screen chemistry with the other cast members is stellar, it's just a shame they did not get a genuinely funny script to work with. The plot is far less exciting than you would expect it to be from reading the summary, it has one predictable beat after another. The bad guys in this also fall flat as a result of the good guys always being one step ahead, we never truly feel like they could be victorious. Lastly, it's very safe, if it had taken risks and been a bit more absurd, it could have been a fun film. I imagine this is a movie that was originally very funny and original on its first draft, but once a bunch of Hollywood executives got their hands on it the film became more and more typical that it lost whatever made it original in the first place. A great ensemble cast can not save a by the numbers comedy. Forgetful and unfunny, Big Trouble will leave you disappointed and I would not recommend it to anyone. A corrupt executive wants to buy a nuclear bomb, but a group of mobsters are also after the device. Best Performance: Tim Allen / Worst Performance: Jason Lee

Based on Dave Barry's novel, "Big Trouble," star Tim Allen (television's "Home Improvement") as a former Pulitzer Prize winning reporter on the Miami Herald (where Barry has been a reporter for years) who has seen his luck run dry. Now working for an advertising firm, Elliot Arnold (Allen) is having father-son problems with his offspring, Matt, (Ben Foster of "Get Over It"), is single, and having problems producing a successful advertising campaign.Just like an old Marx Brothers film, the plot is there only to set in motion the quick-witted dialogue and interaction between the characters. I have enjoyed both of Dave Barry's humor novels(this and "Tricky Business"). They made me laugh out loud as did this movie. I think it captures the spirit of the book perfectly. For those that have laughed at Dennis Farina from his roles in "Get Shorty and even "Snatch," he has never been funnier as a hit man who encounters unexpected roadblocks (literally) on his trip to do a quick sniper job. Tom Sizemore is also excellent as the dumbest crook you'll ever see. Sonnenfeld's touch and a good soundtrack contribute to this madcap misadventure where a hallucinogenic toad, a sub-compact car, and a 'garbage disposal' bomb make for an outrageous race to save a corporate embezzler's step-daughter. I find the film funny without being too silly (a common complaint for other Hollywood parodies) and although not a classic but an entertaining show.Overall rating: 7 out of 10.

Big Trouble (2002): Dir: Barry Sonnenfeld / Cast: Tim Allen, Rene Russo, Jason Lee, Stanley Tucci, Zooey Deschanel: Big mess comedy caper going in too many directions without recovery. A plot is present but its title does it little justice because it doesn't describe the film as a whole. Director Barry Sonnenfeld's worst film since Wild Wild West and that is an accomplishment not to be proud of. Too many characters present an assembly line in shame. Stanley Tucci plays a wealthy husband targeted by hit men because he stole some money. His wife played by Rene Russo is having an affair with Tim Allen. Plot regards briefcase concealing a bomb that travels from various people. Tim Allen as an ad executive is typecast while Russo overacts every bit as bad as she did in Showtime. She is far more talented than this. Jason Lee plays a homeless guy living in a tree and he bears no importance other than to sit in a tree and observe the bullshit. Stanley Tucci is embarrassing as the targeted husband. Zooey Deschanel is featured as Russo's daughter who becomes caught up in this. One could only wish that there was an alternate script for this movie in the briefcase and that he was trying to get it to more confident hands than Sonnenfeld's. Pointless big budget circus act that is more hassle than it is worth. The title clearly describes several careers involved with this film. Score: 2 / 10

A late Sunday evening and this one was on. I hardly watch anything on the TV with commercials in between anymore, but I remembered I liked this one once and due to... ah, what the heck: I watched this. It's certainly no big leap after 'Get Shorty' to figure out this is a Barry Sonnenfeld project, this also being a crime caper of sorts, and Russo and Farina are present here as well. On the other hand, it is quite a step down from 'G.S.'; it's simply not as clever and funny, and lead Travolta beats lead Allen with ease. Also, this story isn't as interesting (not at all), but 'G.S.' has the advantage of being based on an Elmore Leonard story. I didn't know who Dave Barry was, but a quick look around the net tells me what I had suspected: the book ('Big Trouble') is supposedly much more elaborate and ironic (it is suggested that Barry's style resembles Leonard's by the way). It's doable up to a point (as a pretty-much-no-brainer type thing), but you wouldn't miss much if you never got around to seeing this. Five points.
