A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.

This is a dark and sometimes deeply uncomfortable drama

I grabbed this movie based on the title and starring roles, didn't read a synopsis, or look up what it was about. I never even saw a cover as I rented it in HD on PPV. I usually do this to make a film fresh. After the first few minutes I was thinking okay, this could be interesting, which it indeed is. The acting is a little wavy, but the story was pretty true, and par for course, McConaughey had his shirt off in the first few moments. Then the party scene hit, and everything got very bizarre. I suppose this could be the point that the cast and directing staff gave up, or possibly someone else took over the editing console. It was evident that a huge continuity issue with Bridget-the Midget at the party started it all off, and it got squirrelly, almost comical. It became amusing to think that Gary Oldman probably took this role to get that "actor's stretch" that seems to get Oscars for those who play mentally challenged individuals.I gave it a 4, out of sheer camp value.

OK, so I read that Matt and Kate were in it so I was like, Super-dee-duper! That's all I read before I hit "play" on my Netflix. It was a deeper, more satisfying movie than I expected. Gary Oldman is one of my favorite actors; he never fails to impress me, I don't think I've ever seen anything with him that I didn't love.I thought the movie dealt sensitively and honestly with struggling to accept differences. It didn't patronize people with disabilities, or judge them as less than full members of society. I thought the movie also went some distance in providing information about some of the difficulties, both social and medical, that many people with Dwarfism have.A great movie with a soul. And Matt in his underwear. Nice.

I watched this film with a bunch of friends while "under the influence" and I've got to say it's a bizarre film, which is difficult to classify, but nonetheless very entertaining. The difficulty comes from not knowing whether this was a serious heart-felt attempt at conveying the trials and tribulations of the vertically challenged, or if it's a tongue-in-cheek exercise. Perhaps it's a little of both.I'm not going to pretend it's a perfect film- far from it. Some of the lines are truly dreadful, and there are more than a fair share of soap opera moments. You wonder how such a stellar cast, including Gary Oldman and Patricia Arquette. got roped into such a project. Part of you suspects they signed the contract after they'd been drinking heavily. But the cast do seem to be having genuine fun- Patricia Arquette, as always, is a joy to watch, and her ditsy character really brings a great presence to the screen.I would definitely recommend renting it- it's worthy of a few guilty giggles, and the dialogue clunkers are great. It does seem to have a warm heart beating underneath it, so it's certainly not a film that could be viewed as being cruel or exploitative, but it will leave you wondering what the intention of the film actually is.

Happened upon the movie by chance, but am the kind of person who goes for actors/actresses rather than directors, so when I saw Gary Oldman and Kate Beckinsale, thought I couldn't go wrong, and indeed I didn't!For a while though was wondering where Gary Oldman was, and the thought actually passed my mind that the promoters had actually made a mistake, or that they billed Oldman and that he'd have a cameo later on, just to sell the movie. Was I surprised though when the penny finally dropped!Irrespective of Oldman's part in the film however, the movie gave me tremendous insight into a group of people we all, arguably, don't know much about; sensitivities, problems etc. I strongly recommend it, to be viewed with an open mind.
