Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.

The film may be flawed, but its message is not.

Clooney's involvement behind the scenes and its naïveté is perhaps why this film bombed, with script and story changes and an inexperienced director this film lacks the charm that the Coen's would've bought with them and instead of feeling like a fantastically crafted World it's more of an attempt of a student. An all star cast and genuinely intriguing plot there's much that could've been. Not absolutely awful but not what could've been

I love Matt Damon's work. Clooney's, too. But this one hurts. The plot is: Man (and woman) kills wife to be with woman. Simple, right? But, the sub-plot, if you wish to call it that is: Another family is ruthlessly attacked by a racist community. Now, what is annoying is NOT that we were duped into watching this documentary on racism in America, but, that this sub-plot has absolutely NOTHING to do with the main plot. These are two totally different movies, forced into one, and we keep hoping that eventually that they will merge--but they never do. Sure, the boys get together in the end, but, really, by then, it's too late to call this "sub-plot" anything BUT unnecessary.

So let's unpack this satire; -greed, check -racism, check -narsicism, check -capitalism, check -lust, check -hate, check -naivity, check -simplicity, check -apathy, check -disavowal, check -irony, check -stupidity, check -whatever the hell bury your head in the sand and pretend it never happened is, checkMaybe this is the 7 deadly sins enhanced edition a 50's setting.I think they were trying to tick all the boxes and show that things never change, look it is the same right now today, maybe it will never change, the end.Seeing it once is enough but if you want to see it again just watch the news or read if that is still a thing.

Some commentators complain about the racism theme or that the movie has too many varied themes. But imho that's not the point. In fact, the harassment of the new black family in the neighbourhood is depicted quite well, the only positive result in this mess of a movie. It is terrible bad from other reasons, mainly because you have to suspend your intelligence. Several times, it is childishly predictable (eg when the boy hides under bed and hears a fight-guess who was there?, or when his dad eats that sandwich) Secondly, there is a lot of unnecessary violence, but it's only for the sake of violence or to fill the lack of plot. Gardner Lodge and his lover are caricatures and it is hard to believe people as reckless, empty and callous as them could exist. While one specter of emotions is emptiness, the other ends in cheesiness, as in the friendship between the young boys-seen in contrast with all the rest. It is clear to me that Suburbicon copies poorly from Fargo, Season 1.
