Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.

It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

"Don't confuse insanity with the loss of control." Veronika (Geller) is tired of living and decides to die. She takes a cocktail of alcohol and pills. When she wakes up in the hospital she is told that even though she didn't die she damaged her heart to the point of where she could still die anytime. Faced with having to wait longer in an institution she thinks this is worse. She begins to have an effect on other residents there and realizes things aren't as bad as she thought. This is a movie that starts off strong, drags a little in the middle but the ending is perfect and that is really what makes the movie. I don't want to give anything away, but if you start to get bored stick with the movie, you will not regret it. Geller is very good in this, and while the movie deals with suicide it never feels overly melodramatic or cheesy. It had tinges of Girl, Interrupted which I liked. This probably won't win any awards or be considered a classic but it is well worth your time and money. Overall, an OK movie with a perfect ending. I give it a B.

The story centers on Veronika, a woman in her mid twenties who appears to have everything: good looks, good job and a great life ahead of her. Yet she decides to end her own life. She is unsuccessful and awakens in a mental hospital where she learns that she a short time to live. However in the hospital she meets people who are only 'insane' because they don't always follow society's rules. With little left to lose, Veronika embarks on a journey on which she frees herself to experience relationships and emotions and ultimately discovers what it means to live.I Can't Help It. This Is Truly The Best Drama Movie I Have Seen To Date (That Can Be Argued But Thats My Opinion). The Character Development With Veronika Is Fantastic And I Am Not Even Close To Kidding. The Main Reason This Film Appealed To Me Is That I Have Been Through Depression And If I Had To Choose A Stabbing Or Depression I'd Choose The Stabbing, It Was A Long Time Ago But That Is Not Something You Forget.I Was Also Pleasantly Surprised To See David Thewlis In A Movie That Is Good (I REALLY Hate Harry Potter). This Is Also Proof That There Are Still Good Movies Out There Its Just None Of Its Popular Anymore. I Will Also Say I Have Never Read The Book But Its One That I Will Make A Note Of To Read. I Also Liked The Twist That Veronika Was Fine, It Was The One Way That This Movie Could've Ended With Her Discovering What It Means To Live. I Nearly Did Cry When Edward Thought She Was Dead.Overall I Highly Recommend This Even If Your Not The Biggest Fan Of Drama Movies - I'm Not And I Loved This - Because This Is Truly One Of The Best Movies Of 2009.EDIT: I Have Finished Reading The Book And Both The Movie And The Book Are Fantastic 10/10

I have actually signed up to IMDb today just so I could write this review. Veronika wants to die is a terrible film. I won't go into the ridiculous plot synopsis (incase anyone actually does want to watch the film), but it is one of the most contrived depictions of mental health I have ever seen in a contemporary film. The patients in the institute are the most one dimensional 'crazies'- catatonic, unintelligent, childlike, etc... It's only a film I hear you say, but with it's so called 'dark' subject matter and shaky hand-held camera I think this film is attempting at some sort of realism. It is anything but.It has the feel of trying - and failing - to be a film somewhat like Rachel Getting Married (Demme, 2008). However the characters lack depth and the plot (and consequently the ending) leaves you feeling cheated. The music that's played throughout the film is unnecessary, it distracts from the narrative and leaves you with a conscious feeling of emotional manipulation. There are many other reasons why this film is terrible, but as I am so enraged of wasting hours of my life watching it, I can't even think straight. I just hope someone else reads this review and doesn't make the same mistake I did.

OK , let's see ... after you watch this film you could decide what is better , the book or the film , well if somebody has not read the book , i will tell you read it because it is better than the film .... but film is not that bad , actually it is a really good film Lets talk about the performances , first we have to say that Sarah Michelle Gellar was wonderful , seriously she was shocking , she really got into the Veronika's skin , she showed a depressed girl with subtle gestures and strong dialogs ..... i always thought that she is underrated as an actress and i was right she is ... but i think that she is such a talented actress and i think that she deserves an Oscar for the performance that she did in this film . Melissa Leo was fabulous as usual .... Erika Christinsen was depressing and cute at the same time ..... David Thewil was good but not really impressive .... and Jonathan Tucker was a little insipid , i think he did not give everything what he had to give.Well , now maybe you are thinking , why does he say that the plot does not go any where ??? , well because in fact this is a short story , i mean that it does not have a lot to tale .... so i felt that the film prolongs a lot the end . But it has a beautiful messages : "live every moment in the best way possible" and "the life is a miracle so do not waste it" . And it is as a self-help film .Now we have to talk about the characters , well you can see how they grow up , and how they find their life purposes .... When i was watching i film i was really impressed of how they changed their personalities , they taught me that happiness can be everywhere , in every time , they inspired me .My conclusion is that it is a film that has to be seen , and that it is one of the best films of the year ..... it gives you a life lesson and it is the most wonderful thing of the whole film , it gave me a life lesson.
