Sadly Over-hyped

n my opinion it was a great movie with some interesting elements, even though having some plot holes and the ending probably was just too messy and crammed together, but still fun to watch and not your casual movie that is similar to all other ones.

It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.

A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

Not enough words can explain how well this movie was thought out and executed, from the amazing actors to the beautiful clothing and timeless music. Devdas tells an ageless story about love, sorrow and remorse, that forces the audience to experience an emotional roller-coaster. There is so much feeling and passion expressed by the characters, that it ultimately makes it difficult to love or hate any one of them; whether it is Devdas (Shahrukh Khan) who is drowning his sorrows, Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit) who yearns for her unrequited love, or Paro (Aishwarya Rai), who is bound by her unfortunate circumstances. The movie takes you on a journey, one in which you feel as if you are personally feeling the emotions of the characters, experiencing the same circumstances, which ultimately allows you to immerse yourself into the heartfelt story of Devdas. It was personally, a very emotional story,no matter how many times I have watched it, it always makes me cry. Sanjay Leela Bansali does not miss a beat in this beautiful story, and will leave you thinking... what if things were different?. I absolutely loved it!!! You will not be disappointed :) (I would say more, but I really am speechless! Once you see it, you will understand)

This movie is legendary and there is so much to praise about it. First of all it has an antique theme. Second it is a beautiful romantic love story containing true and ever lasting love. There are emotions, melodrama, romance, tragedy and a lot more in this movie. You can learn a lot from this movie about a lot of different perspectives of real life too. Ego is highlighted in it and relationships are of a focus. It is just perfect combination of all these genres mixed in a way to make it amazing. The emotions are so real to make you feel the real feelings of the movie and the cast of this movie has put the best of them into it. It has been a favorite to me and a lot of other people since the day it released. No matter how much you criticize this movie, at some part of your life you are going to love it.

I have seen more than handful now, and they strike me as melodramatic, too focused on singing and dancing, too colorful and far too long. Why they seem so childish compared to just about every other country's films, who knows? "Devdas" has plenty to like about it if you happen to be into Indian film. But I am not, so all those great things just make me scratch my head.

Note: As an American who quite likes, but is not an expert on Indian cinema, I'm the first to admit there may be elements of content or style that I might lack the knowledge to fully appreciate. These are just my personal reactions, take them for what they're worth.Colorful and touching, if occasionally uneven, this story of a Romeo and Juliet like love affair and it's aftermath certainly has it's moments. The performances are strong, it looks great, there's some interesting social commentary about the corrosive effects of class and social status. and there are a few good musical numbers. But the musical element is odd – too much or two little for my taste. One song an hour is just enough to make their sudden appearance a bit jarring, not fully integrated into the style. There's also a tendency to melodrama and overstatement in the plot and even the (quite good) acting, and some important questions about the "whys" behind characters' key decisions in this tale of love and loss are left unexplored. None-the-less, it works well enough to enjoy as spectacle, and heart stuck melodrama to be enjoyable, almost like an old style Hollywood film, if not up to the level of Bhanasali's later, quite brilliant and innovative "Black".
