Rachel Getting Married (2008)

n my opinion it was a great movie with some interesting elements, even though having some plot holes and the ending probably was just too messy and crammed together, but still fun to watch and not your casual movie that is similar to all other ones.

Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.

The film may be flawed, but its message is not.

Anne Hathaway has come a long way from her "Princes Diaries" days. Here she gives a gutsy performance as Kym, a recovering drug addict about to face her past as she returns home to her sister's wedding.All the actors do much for a film that is otherwise a bit directionless. The movie is at its best during a few really strong shows of character interaction backed by plausible dialog. As a whole I'd say "Rachel Getting Married" is a pleasant but slightly underwhelming experience.

A young woman (Anne Hathaway) who has been in and out of rehab for the past ten years, returns home for the weekend for her sister's wedding.For the life of me, I have no idea why this film was praised so much and especially the praise for Anne Hathaway. I find her performance to be just "blah" and really nothing special when it is supposed to be an incredible Oscar-worthy portrayal of a recovering addict.What made me most disappointed by the film, though, is just how much filler it has. Scenes run on far too long. Do we need multiple scenes of people dancing at the wedding? How many toasts do we need at the rehearsal? It seems like any attempt to have a plot is drowned out by conversations or events that really do not matter.

There is nothing noble, empowering nor transcendent about watching the drama unfold of a female, American addict. There is nothing complex. If you think the self indulgent, self obsessed, sociopath behavior of a typical American woman who feels she didn't get hugged enough is worth watching a film about, here you go. Having met enough of these type of ladies and believe me, they're everywhere, there is no way I can stomach watching a film where actually one is starring in it. Although, because of their narcissism, this makes perfect sense for these characters. They believe that they are the star of the worlds narrative. People go on about Hathaway's performance. Are you kidding? This is an actress just simply being. Any actor will tell you this. Put this in the pile with 'gangsters,' 'coke dealers,' 'professors,' etc. This isn't a grand look at a tour de force role of anything new. Actors riff stuff like this as a warm up exercise in an acting class. Believe it.To those that this description fits. Know this: It must be great being a young woman in the western world nowadays: More education than young men, complete freedom to have sex whenever you want, huge pool of men to choose from, a whole culture watching after your psychological and physical well-being even if you do mistakes and make wrong life-choices. I would be a huge narcissist too, thinking my life is one big movie starring ME as the main role of this epic, beautiful, emotional and deep minded story, that is also wealthy and romantic. Until you wake up and realize you AGE. You will get older every day. And somewhere around 30 years old, you will realize that everybody ages, work and money and good looking tall men are not everything - and might even be a huge exception. Then you realize having children and having a stable loving family might just be the most important thing after all - because as you age, you will also see that a lot of your feminist "sisters" simply went the comfortable way in the end, just getting a normal man as a husband and father, suddenly don't wanna go out with you anymore, because they have to pay bills and care for their children. At this moment, since you realize that no one is paying attention to your putrid, wreck of a life - you have only two choices left: be nicer and shut up or be alone like a whole list of older, bitter women who have lied to you.

I lasted 30 minutes and that seemed like some form of Chinese Water Torture. I could see where it was heading. Not where I was heading that is for sure. I like Anne Hathaway and feel she does some great performances. But her character was so unlikable. I did not care whether she died. It reminded me of Mark Wahlberg in The Gambler. Again, I love his acting but his character was so selfish I would have been happy for him to meet his end early on. Looks like he would too. But her character "Kym" (wow what a cool way to spell Kim..not) was so selfish and self-absorbed and really felt sorry for herself. It did not help that the other main characters were like this too. She smoked so many cigarettes as well it is lucky she survived the movie. Her character reminded me of women I have worked with that do an awful job, cause trouble for others and have to be constantly pacified, and yet keep their jobs. This movie showed what is wrong with the world. People like "Kym" get way too much attention. Also the fact that whoever was holding the camera had DTs did not help. I pray I do not watch another movie like this again
