All that we are seeing on the screen is happening with real people, real action sequences in the background, forcing the eye to watch as if we were there.

The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

Film Review: "1492 - Conquest of Paradise" (1992)Receiving probably the highest independently-raised production budget of a decade in the early 1990s, Director Ridley Scott, at age 54, accumulates all the powers of live-action film-making, together with cinematographer Adrian Biddle (1952-2005) and down to a sword's tip production design by Norris Spencer to deliver a standing for all-time 150-Minute-Cut on the dramatized work-life-story of Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) based on an thrilling as original script by screenwriter Rose Bosch, who has been inspired by Marco Polo's experience reports from a 14th-century-journey to China; this "Columbus" interpretation dares to sail the Atlantic ocean westbound to hit an island of the Caribbean with fully-financed prospects from the Spanish Queen Isabel, match-making portrayal by actress Sigourney Weaver and certain in-country aristocrats for "The New World", inhabited by cooperative then-slaughtering Natives in add-on action favors of an immensely-emotional "tour-de-france" traveling with actor Gérard Depardieu in the leading role, who must confront two nemesis characters at once - spiritually as physically - given faces by collision-coursing, suspense-striving supporting cast Armand Assante and Michael Wincot as suspensions-bringing character of Moxica in the 2nd half of "1492 - Conquest of Paradise", when this European co-produced adventure film also-produced by director Ridley Scott and network-forcing producer Alan Goldman makes its struggle-felt toward a monumental motion picture achievement identifiable as entertaining to follow in a just-exceeded 25th anniversary presentation.© 2018 Felix Alexander Dausend (Cinemajesty Entertainments LLC)

Christopher Columbus - THE DISCOVERY (1992) Warner Brothers opened in theaters same time as this film "1492". Viewed "1492" film again on Hulu for this holiday (Columbus Day 2017). I prefer "DISCOVERY FILM" for a number of reasons. At film's end Columbus is hero having completed first voyage successfully and long before things went wrong in Haiti (La Espaniola). "1492" film goes beyond first voyage up to his Third, next to last voyage. Things were truly as bad as depicted in second film. This is shown clearly in the manuscripts of his son Fernando. Fernando's book actually shows things were worse than shown in film. Both films were box office disappointments. However, year 1992 critics seemed to like "1492" film better. It shows Columbus as a victim, failure and basically a "schmuck". This may be why Europeans view Columbus in a good light. In the USA he seems to get little credit......but all the blame.

Gerarad Depardieu. and the music of Vangelis. a hero as result of good intentions. and hostile savages. this film is more a seductive fairy tale than a historical film. and this is the motif for see it as a show, ignoring the inaccuracy, the fake events and the clear errors. the poetry of image. nothing else is the virtue of this full of noble intentions film. Christopher Columbus is only a character and cold be strange to compare him with the portrait, known from school years or result of lectures. because, obvious, the purpose is not exactly to recreate a life but to give an impressive hero. and the good thing - it is a beautiful film. detail who could be enough.

In 1492, we witness an epic(in the original sense of the word) depiction of how things were around the period of the time when Christopher Columbus arrived at the "New World" in the fifteenth century. Based on historical events which occurred during Columbus' expeditions, this film shows how things were before, during, and slightly after Columbus arrived in the islands of the Caribbean. What was particularly interesting was when Columbus arrived in the "New World" which was already inhabited by Indians. Subsequently, we get to see how these natives were conquered & eventually turned into slaves. The same spirit which was responsible for the Inquisition in Spain eventually came into contact with the original natives of this "New World". Historically, this would be a good movie for Americans to observe and analyze on an educational level. For those who may not know, this movie shows that Christopher Columbus and his minions DID NOT discover this "New World", however they DID conquer it, hence the title of the move "1492: Conquest of Paradise".
