A socially awkward but very bright 15-year-old girl being raised by a single mom discovers that she is the princess of a small European country because of the recent death of her long-absent father, who, unknown to her, was the crown prince of Genovia. She must make a choice between continuing the life of a San Francisco teen or stepping up to the throne.

if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

Honestly, the first time I've actually seen this film was when I was pimply teenage girl who also dreamed to become a princess one day. So, that time I found the plot very impressive and captivating. These lovely stories where unattractive freaky geeks suddenly turn into beautiful self-confident kickass people always seemed very fascinating and inspiring to me. To my amazement, after watching "The Princess Diaries" about seven years later I'm still claiming this story is quite convincing. I laughed at Anne Hathaway's grimace and other characters's jokes were pretty amusing. What's of great importance is the main message the author wants to share with the audience (from my point of view). The premise is that we all often do not value the simple things until we lose them by reason of our stupidity. We don't value our real friends (who love our attractively weird personality, not our beatiful appearance) until we reject them for some popular guy built of lie and flattery. We don't value our privacy and freedom until we become the subject of gossiping. And we definitely don't value our happy and carefree childhood until we have to grow up and make responsible decisions. Anyway, the movie is neither tiresome nor second-rate and I'd higly recommend watching it with your family or just by yourself. The excellent acting of Anne Hathaway (and watching her clumsy geeky character transforming into cut a dashing figure), Julie Andrews, Héctor Elizondo and other exceptionally talented actors certainely worth seeing.

The Princess Diaries (2001) is a cute, entertaining family oriented film that is perfect if you're looking for feel good Disney fare. They got many things right with this movie, a lot more was right then was wrong. The main thing that was just perfect was the casting. Anne Hathaway did a great job with her breakthrough starring role. She holds her own and has enough acting ability to make us care about her and her life. This includes her relationships, both romantic and family. And of course Julie Andrews is just perfect as the grandmother and Queen. She is a veteran actress that we all know from the sound of music and Mary Poppins, and she really proves she's still got what it takes. Mandy Moore is good as the high school b***h, and Heather Matarazzo is funny and delightful as ever in the best friend role. The writing is good, it brings out the movies heart and highlights the chemistry between the characters. It's great for a family viewing.... but I think that just about anyone can enjoy this film. 8/10 for The Princess Diaries.

Anne Hathaway makes a cute San Francisco teen age preppie. The Zeitgeist demands that she dress and act like an iconoclast. She and her friends are rowdy, rude, unkempt. Her hair looks like it was attacked by a mad dog. Then, it's discovered that she is heir to the throne of Genovia or Ruritania or Arcadia or someplace. She is visited by the queen, Julie Andrews, a warm personality who has brought innumerable consultants and factotums who are intent on turning Hathaway into the Princess she will become. The director, Garry Marshall, does a good job. He's an Italian-American and must have gotten a kick out of Larry Williams as an uncredited hair dresser and make up artist named Prego Putanesco. As he trims her up, he remarks, "I love your eyebrows. We'll call them Frieda and Kahlo." Now, if this were a dumb movie made only for young girls barely into their growth spurt, would a joke like that have been included? (Hint: No.) I kind of enjoyed it. Nice shots of San Francisco in winter's rain. The fairy-tale story is pretty damned hoary. (I think that's called iambic dimeter. The voices tell me to do it.) Yet the setting, the gags, and the animated performance of Anne Hathaway who has the sparkling grin of a toothpaste commercial, bring it all over the goal line.

Many people don't like "Fluff" movies like this. I can tell, because I get negative reviews whenever I write good things about these types of movies. But I think secretly, even some macho men likes these movies. I personally don't care because if it's a good movie, then it's a good movie whatever the genre is. If there's one word to describe this movie, it's Ann Hathaway. All the movie's goodness owes to her. She's convincing as a princess, and she really is an interesting character in this movie. My eyes were pretty much glued to her all through the movie. Much like Julie Andrews attracted attention when she was younger in "The Sound of Music", she carries the movie with her presence. Julie Andrews by the way also appears in a supporting role in this film. The movie definitely made Ann Hathaway a star. She's probably deserving, because she still has nice presence in a more recent movies like the Dark Knight Rising. In any case, this is a good movie, and is definitely worth the watch.
