Cocktail (1988)

One of the best films i have seen

good back-story, and good acting

Close shines in drama with strong language, adult themes.

The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

This move is pure 80s cheese. It's a straight up melodrama with an unbelievable plot and overacting galore but it's glorious.This is a movie for those who adore the 80s and like Tom Cruise. Tom is really good in this and does his "I'm cooler than everyone" shtick like in Top Gun, Bryan Brown is also very good in this and the scenes with the two of them are probably the best in the movie. If this movie was made in 2018 it would just look like a 2 hour episode of The Bold and the Beautiful but a bit more raunchy. However because it is a time capsule to more interesting, care-free times it is a nice way to forget the troubles of the world whilst rejoicing at the sheer absurdity of this gem.

"Cocktail" is a film that contains a lively narrative with notable modern day thought-provoking philosophy. The story behind this film is a real hedonistic example of what most blokes would love to do. Hardly any responsibility being a bar-tender, except to those you tend - and all the while having a great time. The plot is thin which is why it is so easy to understand and this is what makes the film - the moment you have to think about a film like this, is the moment you miss the point. The soundtrack is great, and the movie soundtrack CD is missing some of the best songs from the film too, the best one when Tom and Elizabeth get frisky under the waterfall in Jamaica.This is an 80's movie that one would certainly enjoy especially those who grew up during the said decade. Also,it was more of an entertaining movie that features bar tenders and flaring as well as 80's soundtrack that included many family songs at that time. As for the story, it was not meant for deep thinking nor for someone to introspect for everything is crystal clear in its theme about ambition,courage and love. While the plot is something that is far from being original and refreshing as it was predictable and clichéd,it will never fall short of entertainment. It also shows Tom Cruise's ability to carry a film and elevate a movie higher in terms of appeal and charisma early in his stardom. Finally,the film remains a cultural piece of the 80's and consists of elements of a guilty pleasure by today's standards.Overall rating: 8 out of 10.

I almost couldn't finish this junk. Tom cruise made a POOR choice by being involved in this, and so did Elisabeth Shue. I like both of the lead actors, but in other movies. The script was very poor and bland, the acting was less than mediocre, and the movie made like no sense! It just told this boring stupid bartenders life story, with his love interest, Elisabeth Shue. Really, there's just nothing remotely entertaining at all here! This film really just came off as a gigantic mess, and a deserved flop. Very poor young Tom Cruise. 1/10. It didn't seen like anyone even cared while shooting this lazy and tired movie, Cocktail (1988)

This is one of those movies that I should like but I don't. It's a film I really wanted to like/enjoy but it did not thrill me at all. I have NOTHING bad to say about this movie - it just was not my personal taste in movies.I mean, I like Tom Cruise (he's a great actor). I like Elisabeth Shue, I like music they used for this movie, I would love to go to Jamaica and it's a nice story. Why don't I like this film? I still cannot put my finger on it. I do not hate this movie but it's not a film that I enjoyed watching. This is another movie I will have to rate in the middle of the road.5/10
