Year One (2009)

It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional

I have absolutely never seen anything like this movie before. You have to see this movie.

Mostly, the movie is committed to the value of a good time.

I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

After the success of school of rock I decided to give Jack Black a break in the acting and directing department until This came along. Its not funny or entertaining in the least and only composes random events together as if an attempt to make it so. The caste was worst I've ever seen and try to play it too straight losing any dignity it had. The sets look terrible as if a kindergarten class was putting together a group project.None of the characters are likable and try to be offensive just to be. I really don't see who they were catering to as even the low brow will caste it aside as deserving of a razzie award. Maybe its not my type of film, but after seeing this atrocity I felt it was my duty to steer clear anyone consider renting of buying the DVD. I usually don't trash films or at least cut them a break if any artistic merit was attempted. Here I just don't see it. All I can say is choose better projects in the future Jack Black and Michael Vera or your careers will stall. I'd give it a zero if possible.

Zed (Jack Black) and Oh (Michael Cera) are a couple of bumbling primitive hunter-gatherers. They are banished from the tribe after Zed eats a forbidden fruit. They meet up with Cain (David Cross) who kills Abel. Then they are sold into slavery like the rest of their tribe.It's a bit of broad comedy from director Harold Ramis. He's taken a page out of Mel Brooks' playbook. Jack Black is very good as the braggart slacker bumbling fool. The problem is that he's not that nice to Michael Cera. We need more bromance. That would help the chemistry.There are some great laughs. It's very scattered, but that's the nature of the beast. There's nothing wrong with scatter-shot comedy as long as they hit the mark every once in awhile. It just needs better chemistry from Black and Cera.

Comedies, with the exception of Rom-Com's seem to get the short end of the ratings stick, but I ask what's harder these days: to jam in a bunch of special effects on screen, or make an audience laugh, and I'd say it's the latter. Year One has many laugh out loud moments and unlike many comedies they aren't all exhausted in the first 15 minutes. The humour is silly and no, don't look for sophistication, but when I think of all the poorly written SNL based films and other comedies that border on the absurd, Year One doesn't deserve the poor ratings it has. Watch it again, or for the first time whatever the case may be and be surprised at the jokes. I don't like rating movies on one general scale so I will say it's a 9/10 in the pure comedy genre - in that it makes me laugh to this day.

the only kind of people hating on this movie are Christians they try to hide the fact how god was and how he is and which people still follow him they hate the fact that this just shows that the only people ever defended by god were not eating pork waring headscarfes etc the god of Abraham is not the god of Christianity that teaches Adolf Hitler is in heaven as long he pays church taxes and that all evil is forgiven xtians have problems with people not being lawless beasts they have problems with laws except those made by humans and what is the point crying about people laughing about it when all you do for your "god" is living the exact atheist lifestyle except you say you believe on time in 10 years hypocrites
