Some things I liked some I did not.
Most undeservingly overhyped movie of all time??
Great Film overall
It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
First of all, there is no mystery to uncover seeing as how the whole mystery is the fact that he suffers from split personality disorder and spends half his time dressed as a woman, and that is revealed instantly at the start of the movie. Movie would have been better if the audience had to figure out on their own that Emma and John were one in the same. But because of the description of the movie, the audience is thinking there is some big mystery, and since we know from the get-go that John and Emma are the same person, we then assume there is some other mystery to be revealed. There isn't. This painfully slow-talking, whispering, and total bore of a movie drags on for an hour and a half, but it feels like a 9-hour movie. Think Norman Bates but extremely functional and impossibly boring. They could've fooled the audience by calling Emma Jon's sister, and doing some tricky makeup and this movie would have been so much better letting the audience discover it for themselves.
This Movie is about the Suffering of an Abused Child that Grows-Up Dazed and Confused. The Film also Suffers from Inattention on all Levels. Never Released, Ignored by Critics, and Misunderstood as a Horror-Show.Cillian Murphy in a Dual Role is Remarkable. A Good Supporting Cast lend Gravitas to the Proceedings. It is Underwritten, Underplayed, and Under-Appreciated as a Character Study. A Subtle Psychological Study of a Disturbed Individual whose Sequestered Mundane Life is Controlled by Two Competing Personalities. His Existence as a Dual Personality is Completely Unknown to the Small-Town-Folks in 1950's Rural America. Than His Life becomes Literally a Trainwreck and Things Spiral Out of Control. The Movie has many Strengths with an Ending that People Find Weak. Not So.Overall, it's Different, Quirky, On the Edge, and Brilliantly Handled. But in Doing so the Unassuming, Laid-Back Style of the Presentation Alienated Everyone from the Producers to the Viewing Audience. It's an Unforgettable Film that will Find a Cult Following and will be Applauded and Appreciated as Word Gets Out.
This is on the weird side of things. It's about a troubled man with a tortured upbringing who dresses as a woman every morning. He successfully hides this from the community until the day a railway accident comes barreling through his back-yard while his woman-side is hanging up the clothes. All the neighbors in the small town think it is his newly hidden wife. So new relationships ensue within the town. And the situation becomes rather tangled with his "wife" impersonations leading to conflicts of interests. It's a slow progression that fortunately never becomes over-wrought. The acting by Cilian Murphy in both roles is first rate. The ending is somewhat inconclusive and unbelievable - and that brought my rating down.
Just saw this movie on our TV and liked it very much. Its ending is quite a surprise! Of course one wonders how nobody sees that Emma is a man. I just told myself that a lot of make up was put on the face to conceal the beard growth. But it is a movie! So for whatever reason, people did not recognize John in Emma. That makes the movie less interesting? One could ask many more questions ~ why is there no mention at all of a father? Why did nobody take care of John when he was a child, did nobody notice his mother had psychological problems and the child should have been protected? But nobody noticed apparently and so we got this story. Hopefully in reality more attention will be paid to abusive parents....I had never heard about Cillian Murphy and I think he is a very good actor. I just hope his eyebrows grew back.
