When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world and into ours -- in fact, smack dab in the middle of Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.

A Disappointing Continuation

The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

One may wonder why Hollywood is so bent on destroying the childhood memories of adults who grew up throughout the 70s and 80s. First there were the 'Transformers', 'Garfields' abomination and now comes the destruction of 'The Smurfs'. I doubt this can even be called a movie as it appears to be more of an extended commercial for Sony products. If they were to make a film, they should have just kept it within the smurf world and not 'merge' it with live action America. The 3d animation of the smurfs are quite lively and cute (it's a shame they're wasted here) and their 'world' is also vivacious and colourful (which is another reason why the story should have been contained in this world but then again, what would happen to all the Sony advertisement?). The live action actors aren't given much to do as they are unable to rise above the formula. Special effects are a waste. Despite all the criticism, the film must have done well enough for sequels. It's an expensive ad, uh, I mean movie, but severely lacking in substance.

OK so its NO masterpiece but hey its entertaining. The story is loosely based on the TV series of the same name created by Ponyo and its about the smurfs who accidentally get sent to our world that is NYC(New York City)where the smurfs(voiced by Katy Perry, the late Johnathan Winters,Jim Cummings, and Kenan Thompson)and meet up with a young couple called Patrick and Grace(Jayma Mays and Neil Patrick Harris)as an evil wizard called Gargomel(played by Hank Azaria)is ruining their land and the Smurfs accidentally stumble across a portal. But with Gargomel and his cat are after the Smurfs its up to the Smurfs two new friends Patrick and Grace to help them get home again.I know this movie is strictly for kids and its a lame rip off of the 2007 Disney movie Enchanted, but hey if you grew up watching The Smurfs then you'll like it. If not then avoid this one. The voice acting was great, even Pop sensation Katy Perry was great as Smurfette and I never knew that Kenan Thompson was in this movie I mean GOD that's the dude from that Kenan and Kel show. The transaction from the CGI Avatar like world to NYC was great. Sure this movie is silly and a tad bit stupid, but hey its not a bad film to watch every once and a while.5/10

After watching the film 'The Darkest Hour' I said the following:'Either throw science to the wind entirely and just call it magic or actually obey the laws of bloody physics. Don't mix and match.'This was because the film was based on scientific principles and then went and showed a radio functioning quite normally inside a Faraday cage. The only explanation for this which I could surmise was that it was a magic radio powered by some kind of dark wizard. I have now learnt that this wizard was most likely Gargamel, the sworn enemy of the Smurfs. Though quite what he had against Russians I cannot think. The Smurfs is a film which sticks to this simple principle and bases virtually everything on magic. Assumedly it is this magic which explains why Papa Smurf somehow has just one Scottish son. Who is apparently called 'Gutsy Smurf' but pretty much may as well just be called 'Scottish Smurf' for just how many cultural stereotypes he exploits. Mostly positive it has to be said: his bravery, his charm and his ravishingly hansom appearance. Goddamn is he a sexy little Smurf. There is a very controversial book which talks about the inherent racism of the Smurfs. Mostly this seems to be based on an old story in which a Smurf gets infected by something which turns him black and makes him mute, violent and insane. This then spreads to the rest of the village. It is claimed that this reflects the offensive attitude towards black people that were commonplace in the elitist white social mores of the time. A point which would probably be more valid if the main protagonists of the Smurfs were not bright blue... I think skin colour in the Smurfs is therefore as meaningless as it is today in our cultured society. If the black smurf started speaking in an African dialect he might have a point. In fact the film 'The Smurfs' uses the skin colour to exceptionally good effect with some very effective jokes of them blending into things with a blue background. The Blue Man Group advert and another for Blu-Ray for instance. I am however disappointed to find that they missed the obvious joke to try and blend into an advert for the band 'Blue' only to find there was nothing blue on it.Ultimately I found the film to be quite entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable. I saw no signs of racism whatsoever. Clearly the author of that critical book has not watched this film. Then again he also goes on to claim that Gargamel is obviously Jewish because of his nose and obsession with gold and power. This point I think is probably made null by the fact that his cat can basically speak English. If all Jewish people had talking cats he may have a point. I feel the author is simply applying his own cultural views onto the Smurfs. Just like my own opinion that Scottish Smurf is one smurf fine smurfing Smurf.

Smurfs 1 Setting In a forest and New York in modern times but in the forest it looks old. There is a evil wizard. Plot The smurfs village was in danger. But clumsy went to a sign saying "GO THIS WAY" But he tripped it said "DO NOT GO THIS WAY" clumsy was in danger and he almost fell in the fall. The smurfs made a smurfs bridge but it was too late ! Because the blue moon rises and it was windy but they got a stick but Gagamel, the evil wizard was holding it the only choice was to go to New york so they flew to New york by the wind in the hole. They twirled side to side through the holes and they arrived at the city. They were worried! Then they got kidnapped then clumsy fell in a box and then they met a man called Patrick. Soon they arrived at New York but the smurfs didn't know the city. Favourite part When they went home. And clumsy was a hero to Patrick's wife and papa were proud .and then they said bye to New york. Gramamel was just in New york for the rest of his life. Recommendation I think someone will like this because it's funny and fun adventures. A.
